MCCAFFREY’S WORLD

                                                                              By

                                                                     Bill McCaffrey

When I was growing up in DC in the 1940’s and 50’s boxing was a big thing in my life.  Weekly pro boxing was held at
Turner’s Arena but the really big fights were held at Uline Arena and Griffith Stadium.  Turner’s was a converted
automobile garage in the 1300 block of W Street NW; Uline Arena was at 3rd and M Street NE.

One of the best known fights was held at Griffith Stadium between Joe Louis and Buddy Bear, Buddy was Max Bears
brother.  Buddy knocked Louis out of the ring in the first round in what Bear called his biggest mistake in the fight
because Louis got back in the ring and beat the heck out of Buddy.

The Golden Gloves early fights were held at Turners with the championships held at Uline.  The Beatles first
performance in the United States was held at Uline.

DC had some great fighters back then like Harry Marnakos, Bobby Foster, Gene Smith, Harry “Biff” Jones, Holly Mims,
and Danny Petro.

Folks like Bobby Magruder kept boxing alive during the late 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.  Boxing was barely alive in recent
years but Mike Wagner and his son Scott came with boxing at Michael’s 8th Avenue in Glen Burnie and they have been
doing a good job with great cards and I have to say they were the ones who led the charge to bring boxing back in the
Baltimore Area.

Folks like Jake Smith, Chris Middendof, Arnie Dansicker, Bobby Magruder, Josh Hall, and lately Mark Tucker, Sr. and
the boxing group in Salisbury have joined the Wagner’s in helping to establish Maryland as a business friendly boxing
state.

Dave Norman as Chairman of the Maryland State Athletic Commission and their staff has done a superb job for boxing
in Maryland.  One of the Commissioners is Benny Alperstein who was an All-American boxer at the University of
Maryland; a Hall of Famer at Maryland appointed by Governor Marvin Mandell, Benny served over 30 years on the
Commission and still does a great job.  Usually Benny is accompanied by his beautiful and lovely wife Betty.

BALTIMORE PRO BOXING

Jake Smith’s Baltimore Pro Boxing held an excellent show at Martin’s West on April 30th and here are the results:
Cecil McCalla ran his record to 7-0-0 with an 8 round majority decision over John Mackey 10-3-1.
Steve Wheeler won by disqualification in the 2nd round over Kareem Wilson.
James Stevenson (8-0-0) won by 2nd round TKO over Dwayne Shelton.
Maurice Byarm took a 3rd round TKO over Hanibal Otey.
Kevin Johnson won a 3rd round TKO over Robert McConnell, Jr.

PACQUIAO SCORES 2ND ROUND KO OVER HATTON

Before over 16,000 at Las Vegas MGM Arena Manny Pacquiao put Ricky Hatton to sleep at 2:59 of the second round.
Pacquiao runs his record to 49-3-2 with 37 KO’s.  Hatton is now 45-2.

Upcoming Boxing Events:
May 29th          Baltimore Pro Boxing presents a “Pro-Am” event at the “Du” Burns Arena.
June 5th            Maryland Boxing Club presents a Pro event at the Carroll County Agricultural Center.
June 18th          Mike Wagner’s Ballroom Boxing presents Pro Boxing at Michael’s 8th Avenue.
June 19th          Pro Boxing at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury.
July 17th           Maryland Boxing Club presents pro boxing at the Carroll County Agricultural Center.

Baltimore Pro Boxing presents a “Pro-Am” event at the “Du” Burns Arena.

ORIOLES – NATS HMMM

The Baltimore Orioles finally swept a series (though only a two game one) they have sunk to the basement in the AL
East.  I still think they stink and will be in the AL East basement when the season ends.  They have three zeros at the
end of their batting order.

Out in LA the Nats snapped the Dodgers 13 game home win streak beating then 11-9.  Rob Dibble really blasted the
Nats because they don’t take fielding practice before games.  The Nats centerfielder doesn’t know how to play the
position.

Going into Friday’s game Ryan Zimmerman has a 25 game hitting streak.

I wonder how much longer before Manny Acta gets a bus ticket out of town?

When are the Orioles going to call up Matt Wieters?

BAYSOX, AEROS POSTPONED
BARK IN THE PARK RESCHEDULED FOR MAY 17

The Bowie Baysox series finale against the Akron Aeros is postponed due to inclement weather.  No makeup date has
been announced.  Bark in the Park has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 17, which is also Vintage Baseball Day.

Fans with a ticket for Sunday’s game can exchange it for a ticket of the same value for any remaining Baysox home
game.

Baysox to Wear Sunglasses at Night
Team Will Attempt to Set World Record Friday, May 29

The Bowie Baysox are ready to challenge the record books on I Wear My Sunglasses At Night Night Friday, May 29.
The team will attempt the world record for most people wearing sunglasses at night in between innings when the Baysox
take on the Harrisburg Senators at 7:05 p.m.

All fans participating in the event must register to make the attempt official.  Registration is easy, as the team will have a
registration table in front of the stadium before the game and one on each concourse during the game.  The first 1,000
fans to register will receive one FREE pair of sunglasses!

The Baysox have a history of assaulting world records.  From 2003-2005 the team set and attempted to break its own
record for most people sitting on whoopee cushions at the same time.  In 2006, fans tried to set the record for most
people brushing their teeth at the same time.  Two years ago, fans tried to set the record for most people yo-yoing at
the same time, and last season the team attempted to have the most people playing the kazoo at the same time.

Dear friends and classmates:
We are including a listing of hotels and motels which are near George Mason University.  Below you will find some
information about four of your options, but many of the others are also fine places.  If you want more information on
lodging, please include your request with your Reunion reservation, and we will contact you.  We checked with Mason
about the use of dorms, but that turned out to be impractical and not any less expensive.
Whichever location you choose, we suggest that you arrive during the day to check in and drive the short distance to
Mason in advance of the evening.  Driving through the City of Fairfax can be a bit confusing with its signals and street
arrangements.

                                                    * * * * * * * * *

Best Western, 3535 Chain Bridge Road (aka Rt. 123), Fairfax, VA, 703-591-5500.  www.bestwestern.com/fairfax.  This is
a nicely remodeled older two-story motel.  It doesn’t have an elevator, but they promised to give our folks first floor
rooms.  It has a full-sized outdoor pool, and a number of in-room amenities.  They do not offer a free breakfast, but do
have a breakfast buffet for $4.50/person.  Their Sales Coordinator, Amy Campbell, has blocked some rooms for us at a
price of $80/night for a double queen room or a king room.  These rooms are on the first floor next to the pool.   If you
wish to book one of these rooms, contact the motel and ask for the Anacostia High School Reunion rate.

Comfort Inn, 11180 Fairfax Boulevard, (aka Rt.50), Fairfax, VA, 703-591-5900, www.comfortinnfairfax.com.  This is a five-
story hotel and fairly new.  They have elevators, of course, and a number of in-room amenities, a smallish indoor pool, a
small workout room, and free hot breakfasts in their breakfast area.  Their Director of Sales is Nancy Golladay, and she
has blocked some rooms for us at a price of $74/night for a double queen room or a king room.  If you are interested,
you may contact the hotel and ask for the Anacostia High School Reunion rate.

Courtyard by Marriott, 11220 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, (aka Rt. 50), Fairfax, VA, 703-273-6161.  This is a
modern one-story motel with numerous amenities. www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iadfo-courtyard-fairfax-fair-oaks/.
There is an indoor pool, exercise  room, restaurant, mini-mart, and a business center.  The pricing is a bit strange.  If
you book a regular rate: $84/night for a king room, or $94/night for a double queen room, (weekend rates) their
breakfast is available for $10 more per couple.  If you book the weekend senior rates: $67/night for a king room, or
$80/night for a double queen, then breakfast is an extra $15/per person.

The Marriott at Fair Oaks, 11787 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Fairfax, VA, 703-352-2525.  This hotel is a somewhat
upscale 6-story hotel with many amenities.  www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iadmc-fairfax-marriott-at-fair-oaks/  It is
located within the confines of the Fair Oaks Shopping Mall in Fairfax, but off to the side of the mall itself.  There are
several major department stores, including two Macy's, and a number of restaurants and movie theatres.  They also
have strange pricing: all king and double queen rooms are regularly $89/night (weekend rate), and breakfast is
available for $10 more per couple.  The weekend senior rates are $71/night for all king and double queen rooms, but
then the breakfast is an extra $15/per person.  In this mall, there are many options for eateries, so I don't know how
many would want breakfast at the hotel.

The two Marriott facilities generally do not block a small number of rooms and even if they did, their sales manager
indicated that the rates would not be less expensive on a “blocked” room.  She suggested our folks contact these
locations individually for rates. Keep in mind that their rates are not “set” for any length of time, so do not delay making
your reservations, as the rates may increase.

WE GET LETTERS….

Coaches Carlesimo, Raftery To Receive Honorary Degrees
Courtesy: Seton Hall Athletic Communications

Former Seton Hall men’s basketball head coaches P.J. Carlesimo and Bill Raftery will be among 1,052 undergraduate
students becoming alumni of the nation’s oldest diocesan Catholic university on Monday, May 11 at Seton Hall University’
s 152nd Commencement Exercises. The ceremony will take place at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The Commencement program begins at 11 a.m., with the procession starting at 10:15 a.m.

As part of the University’s Commencement ceremony tradition, Seton Hall honors outstanding men and women for the
lives they lead and the work they have accomplished. This year Seton Hall will honor Carlesimo, Raftery and Luna
Kaufman with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree. Each will also provide remarks to graduating students.

P.J. Carlesimo
P.J. Carlesimo was men’s head basketball coach at Seton Hall for 12 years. His talented and well-coached team
surprised the collegiate sports world in 1989 by winning their way to the NCAA championship game. He was named
NCAA Coach of the Year in 1989 and Big East Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He moved to the NBA in the
summer of 1994, where he has worked for several teams, most recently Seattle/Oklahoma City. P.J. generously shares
his time on campus as a leader and teacher of young people.

Bill Raftery
Bill Raftery is currently in his 27th season as an analyst for CBS Sports' college basketball coverage. Prior to his
broadcasting career, Bill was Seton Hall's head basketball coach for 12 years. During his entire 16-year collegiate
coaching career, he gained three NIT and four ECAC Tournament berths and was named Coach of the Year in 1979 by
the New Jersey Basketball Writers Association. Bill, too, constantly gives of himself, sharing his faith and his insights with
students and alumni of Seton Hall whenever he is asked.

Luna Kaufman, a survivor of the death camps in World War II, will also speak and receive an honorary degree.
Kaufman is chair emerita of Seton Hall’s Sister Rose Thering Endowment for Jewish-Christian and Holocaust Studies
and was a founding member of the Governor's Council on Holocaust Education.

For more information on all Seton Hall Commencement activities, please visit http://www.shu.edu/events/commencement/

Bill,
I remember Bill Raftery when he played for St Cecilia High School in Kearny, New Jersey. Prior to him going to college. I
think he had a scholarship to La Salle. He and his team beat up on my Seton Hall Prep back then.

I got to know P. J. Carlesimo when we traveled to places like Villanova to watch the Seton Hall Pirates play. Only about
100 SH fans were in attendance while the place held about 6000 Nova rooters. We would talk to PJ prior to the game
when the team was taking warm ups. We sported our Seton Hall colors and I guess we were lucky that Nova always won
or we might have been made to walk the Wildcat plank.

We also met him after a game on the South Orange campus during the year that Seton Hall went to the final two in the
NCAA's and were beaten by Michigan in overtime on a phantom call by referee Clougherty. Rumeal Robinson dropped
in two foul shots and the Hall was beaten 80-79.

The University is honoring that team now with a video of the season 20 years after the fact. Look up www.shupirates.
com  to see how you can get a copy of the just released DVD  'Band of Pirates' which is selling for $25.  Memories, some
good, some bad.
Jerry

Bill,
My little brother is doing a FUNDRAISER with Northern High Basketball to try and help ease the cost of the upcoming
Summer League (there is a 30 team league @ Wise High School) & Summer Team Camp @ University of Pittsburgh.

They are offering a 2 year subscription to ESPN Magazine for $40!  The school gets to keep $30, that’s right 75% of the
$40.  I get the magazine already and it’s a good read.

My little brother is running with the Baltimore Assault, they are going to tourneys in Chantilly, VA - Philly (They WON the
Ship) - Hampton, VA (this weekend) - Durham, NC - Bronx, NY - Cincy, OH, Morgantown - Vegas and LA.  Plus I got him
into a few camps/showcases, so any cost to help with this team camp would be greatly appreciated.  If you are interested
in helping out and will still get to receive 2 years of ESPN magazine get back with me and I'll make arrangements to get
the $40, which you can make out to:  Northern High Basketball, not me lol
