MCCAFFREY’S WORLD
By
Bill McCaffrey
Saturday, May 2nd the Washington Capitals host Pittsburgh in round two of the Eastern Conference playoffs and this
series should be a great one. The Caps came back from a 1-3 record to edge the New York Rangers 2-1 on a goal by
veteran Sergei Fedorov, Caps goalie Simeon Varlamov is the man between the pipes and was outstanding in the
Rangers series. Not since the days of the “Secretary of Defense” Rod Langway have the fans in the D.C. area have
come alive.
Bruce Boudreau is the NHL “Coach of the Year” as far as I am concerned. The Caps have some of the best young
players in the NHL including “Super Star” Alex Ovechkin, Nick Backstrom, Mike Green, and Alex Semin. The Caps will
miss George Brashear for the first five games of the Penguin series because of NHL suspension for some rough player
in the Rangers series.
It should be great hockey played in this series with Ovechkin matching up with Bobby Crosby of the Pens. For the best
hockey information go to Ed Frankovic’s blog on www.wnst.net. He knows what he’s talking about. A big BOO goes to
A. Marks who ignores all hockey news!
NEUENBERGER SCORES AT TALLADEGA
Donnie Neuenberger finished 28th after starting in the 33rd spot in the Nationwide series at Talladega Super Speedway.
A good finish even with some of NASCAR Sprint Cup’s superstars.
It’s a shame that NASCAR does that because it puts drivers like Donnie at a disadvantage. If they want some of their
superstars in the Nationwide series limit it to 3 or 4, I prefer none but when they allow any of them that want they are
picking the pockets of the real Nationwide Series drivers.
ORIOLES IN JUNE SWOON ALREADY
Let’s face it the Baltimore Orioles have a terrible pitching staff and a minor league manager and GM. They have lost 14
out of their 17 games even though they have some very good hitters. Adam Jones is producing but playing Pie in left
field is like eating pie-a-la-mode without ice cream. Can you really see this guy in a major league uniform? Outside of
Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts the Orioles really look like they really need a lesson in fundamentals.
On the other end of the B/W Parkway the Washington Nationals have a couple of good starters in Scott Olson and
Jordan Zimmerman, no bullpen but a couple of good hitters in Ryan Zimmerman, who is on a 19 game hitting streak
coming into May, Adam Dunn, Christan Guzman. Who will win more games this season, the Nats or the Orioles?
NFL DRAFT
Both the Ravens and Redskins had good drafts but neither got what everyone said the team wanted. No quarterback
for the Skins, no wide receiver for the Ravens (you know who I mean). The Ravens got a right tackle who some say is
lacking in the brain power but hey at that position they’ll be able to tell him what to do on every play and I think he goes
well with Gaither the left tackle.
Mississippi’s Michael Oher is 6’5 and 310 lbs and will get the job done. “USA Today Sports Weekly” gave the
Ravens a C+.
Skip Bayliss of ESPN called the Redskins number one pick defensive end Brian Orakpo (6’3, 265) the best player in the
draft before and after the draft. They got a B- from “Sports Weekly”.
Maryland’s Darrius Herwad-Bey was a surprise 1st round pick by the Oakland Raiders who picked him number seven.
Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell threw 131 TD passes in his three years at TT but wasn’t even drafted but he got a free
agent contract from the Cleveland Browns.
I guess Jason Campbell feels better now that Owner Danny didn’t get a QB but he still better watch out cause I hear
Owner Danny is still on the prowl for a QB and the Skins did sign Missouri’s QB Chase Daniels as an undrafted free
agent.
Maryland players who were undrafted but hooked on as free agent signees were: Edwin Williams, Center, Redskins,
Chase Bullock, LB, Arizona, Scott Burley, OT, Redskins, Jeremy Navarra, DE, Jacksonville, Dave Philstin, DE, Seattle,
and Isaiah Williams, WR, Ravens.

Divas are primed to take on Passion
Gazette.net, April 30, 2009
The D.C. Divas Demolish Detroit 35-0
The Divas made history last Saturday by being the first team to ever beat the Detroit Demotion on their home field.
The Demolition are one of the premier teams in women’s football, compiling a 65-3 record prior to this year, including
the 2007 IWFL Championship. Last Saturday was not their night.
The Divas totally dominated, winning 35-0 in a game that was called after the first half due to lightning. It was the first
time that Divas head coach Keith Howard had met the legendary head coach of the Demolition, Tony Blankenship.
Coach Howard summed it up, “This was an important win against a first-class team.”

COLUMBIA UNION SWEPT 11-1 AND 9-1 BY BOWIE STATE
Columbia Union College had no answer for red hot Bowie State University as the Lady Bulldogs sweep the Lady
Pioneers 11-1 and 9-1 in non-conference softball action. Bowie State improves to 26-6 on the year with one regular
season game remaining at Division I Howard University - Wednesday, April 29th at 2 p.m. Columbia Union's overall
record dips to 4-24.
Columbia Union missed a great opportunity to put pressure on the three-time CIAA Champions in the top of the first
inning. CUC’s April Ridenour led off the game with a single. Erin Wright reached on a fielder’s choice but forced
Ridenour out at second for out number one. Kelsey Wright singled to third, advancing Wright to second. Christina
Smith stepped and fouled out to the catcher. The Wright girls moved up 60 feet on a passed ball and Lauren Decker
walked to load the bases. Fortunately for Bowie State, Rebecca Zanelotti lined out to third to end the inning with three
Lady Pioneers on base.
BSU’s Lady Bulldogs put the visiting Lady Pioneers away early in game one, putting nine runs on the scoreboard in the
first inning. Bowie State punished Columbia Union pitching (Zanelotti), sending 13 batters to the plate and pounding out
nine hits.
Jenna Pickel began the second inning with a single through the left side of the Bowie State infield and later scored
Columbia Union’s lone run. Pickel’s run was courtesy of a single to left field by Ridenour.
Sophomore Annette Makle opened inning three with a hard shot to third. Two batters later, Junior Kelley Alexander
belted a two-run home run to account for Bowie State’s final runs on game one. Freshman Shanae Smoot led Bowie
State with a game-high three hits in the opening game of the twin bill. Seniors Tiffany Toney and Tricia Corbin along
with Alexander added two hits each in the game victory.
Columbia Union scored first in game two when Kelsey Wright singled in the second inning, scoring Ridenour. Ridenour
reached base on a single and advanced to second via the stolen base. Bowie State quickly responded in their half of
the second, scoring four runs on four hits. Smoot grounded out to the pitcher and senior Heather Enders followed that
with a single to deep left field. Senior Ashley Cook blasted her ninth homer of the season, scoring Enders. Toney was
responsible for BSU’s other two runs in the third after hitting a double which scored sophomore Danielle McClay and
junior Faline Brown.
Bowie State scored one in the third and another run in the fifth inning before ending the game early in the bottom of the
sixth inning. Leading 6-0 after five, Bowie State senior Virginia Hockey reached first and advanced to second after a
dropped fly ball by the Columbia Union center fielder. McClay sent a rocket through the left side of the Columbia Union
defense, moving Hockey to third. Toney grounded out, moved McClay to third and scored Hockey on the play. Corbin
hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring McClay from third. With Bowie State leading 8-1 and one run away from the 8-run mercy
rule for the 19th time this season, Alexander hit her ninth home run of the year to close out game two.
Cook and Alexander paced BSU with a pair of hits apiece in game two. Cook and Toney tied for game-high RBI honors
with three each.
AARON JOHNSON AND MICHELLE PALMER DO WELL AT PENN RELAYS
The Bowie State University outdoor track and field teams began post conference competition this weekend at the Penn
Relays at Franklyn Field located on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Sophomore Aaron Johnson (Temple
Hills, MD, Oxon Hill) competed in College High Jump (Eastern Division) and placed second with a jump of 2.10m (6-
10.75). Johnson moved himself into fifth in the Division II High Jump rankings.
Bowie State 4x400 team consisting of Walter Morton (Lanham, MD, DuVal), Byron Lewis (Waldorf, MD, Westlake), Jamin
Gallman (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) and David Rustin (Laurel, MD, Laural) qualified for the Outdoor
Nationals, just missing the plaque by one spot, crossing the finish line with a time of 3:14.81. The men's 4x800 team
was on a mission, in spite of missing a leg from the team that set a BSU record. To view video of the men’s 4x800 event,

Freshman Michelle Palmer (Ft. Washington, MD, Oxon Hill) performed very well for the Lady Bulldogs. Palmer
participated in the women's 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and Sprint Medley and according to Coach Latimer, was Bowie State's
Outstanding Athletes on the women's side.
Bowie State returns to competition - Thursday, April 30th at the Liberty (University) Twilight Qualifier in Lynchburg, Va.

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 6, York Revolution 2
Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland
The Blue Crabs saved the best for last on Thursday night. The final game of a seven-game season-opening
homestand was also the most exciting game at Regency Furniture Stadium of the young season, as the Crabs beat the
York Revolution (2-5) by a 6-2 score to sweep the series and win their fifth in a row, improving to 5-2 on the season. A
great starting performance by right-hander Ryan Bicondoa, a two-run homer by Jeremy Owens in the seventh inning,
and a three-run triple by Steve Doetsch in the eighth were the brightest spots for Southern Maryland.
The Blue Crabs will next be in action Friday evening at Campbell’s Field in Camden, New Jersey, taking on the Camden
Riversharks in their first road game of the season. The series against Camden will be three games, ending Sunday
before four games in York starting Monday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., (start may be briefly delayed due to festivities
around the game being Camden’s home opener) and the Blue Crabs radio broadcast will begin at roughly 6:50 p.m.
Scheduled starters are left-hander John Halama for York, and righty Nate Bump for Camden.
As for Thursday’s game…
Blue Crabs starter Ryan Bicondoa was excellent, and pitched to contact perfectly for six and a third innings. Although
he registered just one strikeout, Bicondoa allowed just four hits and a run on a solo-home run to left by Josh Johnson in
the fifth inning.
The Crabs bullpen continued to be stellar, as the trio of lefty Jason Navarro, Jim Ed Warden and Matt Schweitzer pitched
in to cover the final two and a third innings, allowing just one hit and a run, striking out three as a group. The hit was
another solo home run by York in the ninth, again to left by Jeff Eure off of Schweitzer. At that point however it was still
6-2 in favor of the home team, which is how the game would end.
The Blue Crabs bullpen has given up just four earned runs total in seven games, and has not allowed a single run in the
seventh or eighth innings so far this season.
After York had a 1-0 lead because of the Johnson home run in the fifth, a one-out single by Eric Crozier set the table for
the two-run blast by Owens to give the Crabs a lead they would not relinquish. The homer was a tape-measure shot by
Owens, way out to “Crabby Cove” in the left-center power alley. Lefty reliever Jason Kershner gave up the home run,
and would be saddled with the loss. Off reliever Travis Phelps for York in the eighth, Steve Doetsch found his way to
the plate with the bases loaded and one out, and promptly sent a rocket to the left-center gap as all 2,789 fans in
attendance at Regency Furniture Stadium went wild. As the ball rolled all the way to the wall, Doetsch ran hard the
whole time and slid into third for a triple, driving in three runs to clear the bases. Southern Maryland’s sixth and final run
was Doetsch, when he trotted home on an RBI single to right field by Chuck Jeroloman a batter later.
The Revolution would waste a superb outing by starter Mike Smith, who tossed six scoreless innings and faced just
three over the minimum before the Revs bullpen imploded and things unraveled. Smith gave up just two hits and a walk
while striking out six. Navarro picked up the win for the Crabs, throwing a scoreless two-thirds of an inning.
Crabs third baseman Patrick Osborn and Revs left fielder Matt Esquivel each entered the game having hit safely in the
first six games of the 2009 season. Unfortunately, each went 0-4, snapping their league best streaks in the early going
of the ’09 campaign.
The Nationwide Tour Returns to Prince George's County and the Country Club at Woodmore for the third
year
Golf Channel to Broadcast Live
The PGA Tour's Nationwide Tour, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, will return to Prince George's County for the
third straight year with the Country Club at Woodmore again serving as host. The 2009 Melwood Prince George's
County Open will be played the week of June 1-7, 2009.
"The growth of this tournament over the last two years has been phenomenal," said Teo Sodeman, Tournament
Director. "The Golf Channel airing our event speaks to just how far it has come in such a short time."
The Golf Channel, whose coverage will begin on June 4, is not the only new feature at the tournament this year. The
tournament's June 1 start means it will not be held over the Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, Astro Events, a leader
in the children's entertainment business, will create a kids zone just off the 18th hole. Melwood becomes one of the first
PGA Tour stops to have a kids zone and supervision of the area will be conducted by the Melwood staff.
Other improvements for 2009 include a video board for highlights and more choices for refreshments.
"Each year our goal is to enhance the previous year's fan experiences," said Sodeman. "We feel fans coming to the
2009 Melwood Prince George's County Open will thoroughly enjoy their experience and feel they got a great value."
The tournament will once again feature 156 top professional golf stars and they will be competing for a purse of
$675,000 (winner collects $122,000). While the field will not be set until late May some early names who will be
attending include: Bob May, Mark Brooks, Jim Gallagher, Jr., Guy Boros, Len Mattiace, Steve Pate, Grant Waite and Jim
McGovern.
The course at Woodmore is ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region by Golf Digest. Paul Claxton won the inaugural
event in 2007 and went on to earn his 2008 PGA Tour card when he finished 10th on the final money list. Same
happened for Jeff Klauk in 2008, who after winning at Melwood went on to be one of four players nominated for
Nationwide Tour Player of the Year. He is currently 44th on the 2009 PGA Tour money list.

WE GET LETTERS…..
Bill,
I absolutely loved the video of Cagney and Hope dancing. I’ve played it numerous times. Question: if anyone knows the
answer to this, it’s you. Where is the Softball Hall of Fame? I understand that Chick Payne and his son were inducted –
the only father and son inducted. Chick was a star catcher on the Eastern High School baseball team in the fifties. By
the way, we got tickets to The Memories on May 2 in Chesapeake Beach. Thanks for the notice about them.

Some info re Seton Hall that I Sent to the SHU Web Site, Posted by ponypirate on 04/29/09 at 12:12PM
I would not worry about Oliver and Garcia since, although height is needed, we did recruit 6'8" Herb Pope and 6'7"
Ferrakohn Hall. Jeremy Hazell plays bigger than 6'5" and Brandon Walters at 6'9" might just surprise us.
Some years ago UNLV played for a National Championship and their tallest guy was only 6'7". Now they were wide
bodies, but if Gonzo can teach the smaller lads how to block out they can defeat much taller opponents. I firmly believe
that Gonzo has the making of an NCAA team with or without Oliver and with only part time help from Garcia.

NOTS town update On track for 40-122.
There can NEVER be too many NOTS replays on Masn or too much total humiliation steeped on the Lerners, the front

Not until those named above are dragged out of there for the last time, and/ or the final blue seat remains empty at the
