McCAFFREY’S WORLD

                                                                               By

                                                                     Bill McCaffrey

This past Saturday I attended the 2009 Jocks Reunion and Induction Luncheon a the Greenbelt American Legion.  It
was a great event and Charlie Brotman did a super job as the MC.  It was great atmosphere and I had a great time
seeing folks like Joe Warren, Charlie Brotman, Frannie Gleason, Ray Fox, Kenny Talbert, Pat Clarke, Horace Highsmith,
the legendary St. John’s coach Joe Gallagher, and Frank “Bevo” Shore.  Dave Prinkert was there and the poster boy for
the DC Roller Derby girls did not look good.

I sat at the table with one of the inductees Lou Glickfield, his sons Adam and Neil and my good friend Emmett Lanier.
The induction of Lou Glickfield was long overdue, he was All-Met in football, and played a good game of basketball.  He
played at Central High School in DC and also played football for Car Credit (one of the best teams on the East Coast).
His coach Lou Chacos considered Glickfield one of the best lineman he ever coached in his 25 years coaching at the
high school or college level.  Glickfield was the founder and owner of Marlo Furniture and did so many good things for
people it would take too much space to tell you about all of them.  My hats off to Lou Glickfield and my congratulations
go out to him on receiving this great honor.
A special honorary award went to my good friend John “Jack” Hoffman but he couldn’t be there cause he had fallen and
was in the hospital and I ask you all to put him on your prayer list.
Another award went to my good friend Joe Warren for being one of the leaders of the Jocks and for the great job for the
Prince George’s County Boys and Girls Club.  Joe was also one of the best college football officials in the United States.
Joe Warren has done a great job for sports in Maryland and the Jocks Reunion event.
Other inductees were:  Lambert “Hunk” Anderson of Anacostia High School; Robert Armentrout of Tech; Benjamin
“Benny” Duvall of Coolidge; William “Billy” Hite of Eastern (I worked the summer of 1951 with Billy at the C&P Anacostia
Frame); Dr. Walter H. Kirk of Eastern High School; Verizelos “Jello” Lagos of Central High; Paul “Cookie” Pacini of Tech;
Paul “Dutch” Schaefer of Eastern High; and Edward M. Silvester of Western High School.
It was an outstanding event and the committee that put it together deserves a “well done” wave of the hat.  The
committee consists of: Charlie Brotman (Chairman), Danny Bass, Horace Highsmith, Harry Hofberg, Hal Nitowitz, Henry
Sachs, Joe Warren, and Mo Zanger.  Also in attendance was the Historian of high school sports in the Washington, DC
area – Danny Morrison who does an excellent job.

REDSOXS SWEEP THE BIRDS

It finally caught up with the Baltimore Orioles in Boston and the RedSox swept the Orioles in four straight, oh you say the
Orioles rebounded when they got back in the “Yard”, but then the Chicago White Sox beat them in game two of their
three game set.
Felix Pie looks like he needs big help, I won’t say he’s a bust but does need help in the field and at bat.  The last few
moves the Orioles have made (Bergesen and Montanez) make you wonder if the Orioles front office knkows what they
are doing and why those two plus Matt Wieters haven’t been in Charm City since day one of this season.
I wonder how many more that are down on the farm that should be here.  The Orioles lost starting pitcher Alfredo Simon
for the rest of the season and most likely all of next season as he goes under “Tommy John” surgery.  Ryan Freel was
put on the 15 day DL by the Orioles.

The Nationals are starting to catch up to the Orioles, on the field that is but in the front office they are making forward
moves not backward.  The signing of Ryan Zimmerman for forty-five million over five years was a big plus for the Nats
compared to the hesitation in the Orioles treatment of Matt Wieters.

BASEBALL

The Bowie Baysox announced three roster moves:

RHP Jason Berken transferred to AAA Norfolk from AA Bowie

RHP Pat Egan transferred to AA Bowie from A Delmarva

LHP Ryan Rodriguez transferred to Temporary Inactive List

Berken was 1-1 with a 5.63 ERA in two starts for the Baysox this season.  This is his first trip to AAA.  Last year, Berken
was 12-4 with a 3.58 ERA in 26 games with the Baysox.
Egan joins the Baysox after appearing in two games for the Shorebirds this season.  Egan was 0-0 and did not allow an
earned run in 6.0 innings for Delmarva.  He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.  Egan spent last year in
Aberdeen, going 5-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 14 starts.
Rodriguez is 0-0 with a 10.54 ERA in four appearances for the Baysox this season.  After a rough first appearance,
Rodriguez has only allowed one earned run over his last 5.0 innings pitched.

The Bowie Baysox have made a pair of roster moves.

OF Jeff Fiorentino transferred to AAA Norfolk from AA Bowie

OF Joe Nowicki transferred to AA Bowie from A Aberdeen

Fiorentino has struggled so far this season, going 2-for-23 with a double and a run scored on the season.  Fiorentino
played in 68 games for the Norfolk Tides last year, hitting .268 with 15 home runs and 65 RBI.

Nowicki spent all of last year with Delmarva, hitting .276 in 130 games with 19 home runs and 78 RBI.  This is his first trip
to AA.  Nowicki has not played in a game yet this season.

The Bowie Baysox sent RHP Fredy Deza to AAA Norfolk.  Deza has appeared in three games for the Baysox this
season, going 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched.  Deza appeared in six games for the Tides in 2008, going 1-1
with a 2.25 ERA in 8.0 innings.

Gleason has appeared in two games with the Frederick Keys this season, including one start.  He is 0-1 with a 6.35 ERA
on the season, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in 5.2 innings.

Gleason spent all of 2008 with the Delmarva Shorebirds, going 12-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 30 games including 21 starts.  In
his career, hw is 17-7 in 46 minor league games.

Baysox Announce Food Allergy Awareness Night

The Bowie Baysox are getting ready for Food Allergy Awareness Night on Thursday, May 14.  The team is taking the
necessary precautions so that fans affected by food allergies, anaphylaxis and celiac disease can see the Baysox take
on the Erie SeaWolves at 7:05 p.m.
The team is proud to work with the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, the University of Maryland School of Medicine's
Center for Celiac Research, Allergy & Asthma Network: Mothers of Asthmatics and Johns Hopkins Children Center to
offer two sections to fans with food allergies.
There will be a FOOD-FREE ZONE in the lower reserved section of Prince George's Stadium with an exclusive entrance
on the third base concourse.  The section will be cleaned extensively prior to the game and absolutely no food will be
permitted in the section during the game.  However, fans sitting in the food-free zone will be allowed to bring soda and
bottled water into the section.  Tickets in this zone will be $11.
In addition to the food-free zone, the Baysox are offering a GLUTEN-FREE SECTION.  Seats in the gluten-free section
will include a voucher for a hot dog on a gluten-free bun, chips, a regular size soft drink and a gluten-free cookie.  Seats
in the gluten-free section with the food voucher are $13.50.
To help protect fans, the Baysox will not sell peanuts on the third base concourse during the game.  The team will also
list every ingredient of every item sold on signs at each concession stand.  The Baysox will also raise awareness for
food allergies throughout the night with tables on the concourse level.
To purchase seats in the food-free zone or the gluten-free section, fans can contact Promotions Manager Chris Rogers
at (301) 464-4855.  To guarantee seating within the designated areas, seats must be purchased at least 48 hours
before the game.
The Baysox 17th season as the class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles is underway!  Don't miss a moment of the
action as the Baysox attempt to bring home their first Eastern League championship.  Individual game tickets and ticket
packages are available now at www.baysox.com or by calling the Baysox box office at (301) 464-4865.

It's A Double Play For All Ages!

Vintage Baseball Day And Sundae Sunday Coming in May
The Bowie Baysox are excited to announce Vintage Baseball Day and Sundae Sunday on Sunday, May 17.  The events
will team up to delight fans of all ages as the Baysox take on the Erie SeaWolves at 2:05 p.m.
Vintage Baseball Day will commence before the Baysox hit the field.  The Chesapeake and Potomac Base Ball Club will
play a three-inning exhibition at 12:30 p.m.  The vintage team plays by 19th century rules using authentic replicas of
19th century equipment and uniforms. As was the custom in the 1860s, the club plays the field without gloves.
The Baysox held their first ever Vintage Baseball Day last year but the weather refused to cooperate.  Bowie eventually
played the Connecticut Defenders after a lengthy rain delay, but the three-inning pre-game exhibition was cancelled.
If vintage baseball isn't enough to draw fans to Prince George's Stadium, Sundae Sunday is sure to do the trick!
Sundae Sunday is the second of the Baysox monthly Kids Club Events.  Members of Louie's Kids Club and their parents
are invited to an all-you-can-eat one hour ice cream sundae bar on the "sweet" level of the stadium starting at 2 p.m.
Louie will surely stop by to see all of his young friends!
While all fans with tickets can enjoy Vintage Baseball Day, only members of Louie's Kids Club can purchase tickets for
Sundae Sunday.  Tickets for Sundae Sunday are $15 and must be purchased on or before Thursday, May 14.  The
Sundae Sunday tickets include the sundae bar and an upper reserved seat ticket for the game (regularly $11).  Kids
Club members can contact Dana DeFilippo at (301) 464-4871 to purchase tickets for Sundae Sunday.
Louie's Kids Club is FREE and easy to join!  Fans ages 12 and under can sign up at any Baysox home game, or at www.
baysox.com.  The Baysox will host a special event for Kids Club members each month of the season and Kids Club
members will receive a FREE gift for attending a game.

the championship game.  Senior Tiffany Toney was named the softball championships Most Valuable Player.  Kudos to
the women’s tennis team for finishing third overall and a special congratulations to senior Jessica Bond for winning the

WE GET LETTERS….

Bill,
Great article on Blue Crabs opening day, but I miss “We Get Letters” especially the week after the session ended.  I am
sure there is somebody you could have “Busted their Chops”.
Barbi

Dear Barbi:
I think a rundown will be in the next column.
Bill

Bill,
Enjoy your column.  Orioles have now lost 3 in a row to the Red Sox.  Went to opening day and Saturday’s game against
Tampa Bay, Guthery pitched both times and won.  The problem is the Orioles have no other consistent starters, and an
average bull pen which will get worn down by late May.  They will be lucky to finish in the 4th slot.  Take Care.
George

George,
Now that Simon has gone down the Orioles really need help in the starting department.
Bill

Bill,
Here’s an e-mail I received from John DiSanto about putting up a Statue of Joey Giardello in South Philly.
I am currently fundraising for a project to place a life-sized statue of Joey Giardello in South Philly.  The effort is a non-
profit (501.c.3) collaboration of Philly Boxing History, The Veteran Boxers Association – Ring 1 and the Harrowgate
Boxing Club.  We are doing pretty well and have reached the halfway mark of our fundraising drive.  We are looking for
people interested in Boxing history, and specifically in Giarello, who might want to help us out with a tax-deductible
donation. Thanks
John DiSanto, Philly Boxing History
Thanks,
Henry Hascup

Bill,
How about a loo-a-like – Paul Weasel and Alfred E. Newan.
CN

Dear CN,
That’s a good one.
Bill,

I heard you were once caught necking in Rock Creek Park.
PS

Dear PS,
Yes it is true and it was with one of the nicest, most beautiful girls I knew in high school and don’t send me any more
questions like this one.
Bill

Bill,
Can the Orioles stay out of the anchor spot in the AL this season?
Baseball Bob

Dear BB,
I doubt it.
Bill,

What do you think about Anita Marks?
Sam

Dear Sam,
She’s like the Sports Babe, really though Debbie Taylor, Amber Theoharis and Chris Cole are better than her.
Bill

Bill,
How is Tom Davis considered the best sportscaster in Maryland?  I can think of ten who are better than him.
Stan the Sport

Dear Stan,
Ten?  How about 20, I think Johnny Holliday is the best with Nasty Nestor Apparico, Mark Vivano, Bruce Cunningham,
Scott Garco, Rex Snider, all better than Giggles and there’s more.
Bill

SPORTS NOTES

I endorse Josh Cohen for Mayor of Annapolis.  He is bright, intelligent and has done a great job as an Alderman and
Councilman.  He is a person of the people!

I’ll miss John Madden on NFL telecasts.

Remember Josh Lewin?  He’s now doing Texas Rangers telecasts.

The Washington Caps are down to what could be their last playoff game this season after a 2-1 loss to the New York
Rangers that left them trailing the Rangers 3-1.  I really thought the Caps could bring home the Cup.  Their Friday game
at the Pollin Pleasure Palace could be their last this season.

Saturday’s NFL draft will produce many surprises and a flurry of trades.

I wonder where they are today…Shirley Conner, Margie Gemhofer, Don Cummings, Susan Duigod, Anne Morningstar
Jones, Joanne O’Rourke, Ruth Ann Rafferty, Aileen Gantt, and Linda Gerrick.

I think Colin Cowherd followed by Bruce Cunningham should get more air time.

I had a great lunch this week with AACC Men’s basketball coach Tom Smith and Austin Smith and we talked about the
old days in DC.
