MCCAFFREY’S WORLD
By
Bill McCaffrey
Again this baseball season the Baltimore Orioles are off to a fast start and I hope they keep it up. In the opener they
blasted the New York Yankees and cut down Mark Teixeira 10-5 in game two of the three game set the Orioles slipped
by the Yankees 7-5 (Teixeira hit a home run) and then in game three the real Yankees showed up and Teixeira and his
crew rocked the Orioles 11-2. Teixeira hit a double and home run and the Orioles looked like they were in their usual
mid-season swoon.
I thought the Washington Nationals were going to be better with the addition of Adam Dunn and a few others but they
dropped a three game set to the Marlins.
I can’t believe the Baltimore Orioles won’t give Nestor Aparacio a press pass and yet they give one to Ed “Downtown”
Brown. He has no valid reason to get one and I must say shame, shame on the Orioles and their PR man Greg Bader
for denying Nestor and giving “Downtown” one. I wonder how many more frauds are on their press pass list? The
Orioles do not have a good PR person and haven’t since the days of Bob Brown (no relation to “Downtown”) and Rick
Vaughan.
The Orioles sold out opening day, half of what they had opening day the second game, and a fair crowd on Thursday.
Look for the crowds to go into a swoon as the team losses pile up and make no mistake they will.
How much longer will the Nats keep Manny Acta as manager?
Here’s our National League picks:
EAST
N.Y. Mets-- how can a team pick up Johan Sanatana, J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriquez, add them to David Wright,
Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran and a few others and not make the Mets to be ‘the Beast of the East”.
Atlanta Braves---their pick-up of Derek Lowe and Javier Vazquez was super. Chipper Jones and Brian McCann are
blue chippers.
Philadelphia Phillies---still a great team with the addition of Raul Ibanez to add to Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy
Rollins, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge.
Florida Marlins---with the lowest payroll in baseball the Marlins put a decent team on the field just swept the Nationals
who have almost double the payroll of their Florida rivals. They have Dan Uggla, Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hemida and
Ricky Nolasco are the core of the Marlins.
Nationals---Manny Acta, still around? He should already be gone. Bring in Davy Johnson. Adam Dunn, Ryan
Zimmerman, Christian Guzman and Lastings Milledge are solid. Elijah Dukes is a bust. I think the Nats pitching will
improve as the season goes on. Acta must go for the Nats to improve.
CENTRAL
Chicago Cubs---may be the best team in the NL. OF Milton Bradley and closer Kevin Gregg were great pickups. Look
for them to pick up another starting pitcher. Lou Piniella is a great manager.
St. Louis Cardinals---Manager LaRussa is another great manager. Look for SS Khalil Greene to have his best season
in the majors, strong team.
Cincinnati Reds---Aaron Harang and Edinson Volquez anchor a solid pitching corp. Willy Taveras was a nice pickup,
Ramon Hernandez wasn’t. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce are studs.
Milwaukee Brewers---solid team led by Richie Weeks, Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder can bring it.
Houston Astros---look for Hunter Pence, Wandy Rodriquez and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriquez to have good seasons. Jose
Valverde is a good closer.
Pittsburgh Pirates---Freddy Sanchez, Nate McLouth, the LaRoche Brothers (Adam and Andy), Brandon, Moss, Jack
Wilson, Paul Maholm, and Matt Capps give the Iron City natives hope, but not much.
WEST
Los Angeles Dodgers---Joe Torre has the best in the West and the Dodgers brought back the speedy Rafael Fucal
from Atlanta and the Braves didn’t like it, they brought in Orlando Hudson, re-signed Manny Ramirez. They may have
the best catcher in baseball in Russell Martin. Top pitchers in Hiroki Kuroda, Clayton Kershaw, and closer Jonathan
Broxton.
San Francisco Giants---can Edgar Renteria still bring it? Is Randy Johnson now a dependable hurler? Is Tim
Lincecum still a “Cy Young” pitcher? If the answers are yes the Giants will give the Dodgers a run for number one in the
West.
Colorado Rockies---Todd Helton returns to form a top fielding/hitting infield with Clint Barmes, Troy Tulowitzki, and
Garrett Atkins. Chris Iannetta is one of the top catchers in the NL. Look for Ryan Spillborghs to have a breakout year,
he has all the tools. Good pitching staff headed by Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez and closer Houston Street.
Arizona Diamondbacks---they could move up a notch or two, they have talent with players like Justin Upton, Mark
Reynolds, Felipe Lopez, Stephen Drew, Chris Young, Dan Haren and Jon Garland.
San Diego Padres---Will Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez be with the Padres all season? Heath Bell is the new closer
for the team. May gives the Nationals a run for the worse team in the NL.
SMITH TOP MENS COACH IN MARYLAND JUCO
Anne Arundel Community College Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Smith was voted the Maryland JUCO’s Men’s Basketball
Coach of the Year. His team this year was 18-11 overall (10 were league victories). There are 17 men’s teams in the
Maryland JUCO. Bill Lewitt one of the best coaches in Maryland had high praise for the job Smith did. Lewitt always has
top teams at Cecil Community College. John Wiley coach at P.G.C.C. also said Smith had done a great job at AACC.
Smith looks to improve next season. I think you folks are missing out if you don’t take in a Men’s or Women’s game at
AACC. Tom Smith not only is a great coach but he’s a great person. My personal congratulations go out to Tom Smith!

Bowie Baysox announce their 2009 opening day roster. The roster includes ten former Baysox players and seven
players with major league experience.
Pitchers Jason Berken, Gerardo Casadiego, Fredy Deza, Jim Hoey, Ryan Keefer, Wilfredo Perez and Chad Thall are all
returning to Bowie. Infielders Paco Figueroa and Jonathan Tucker, and outfielder Jeff Fiorentino have also played for
the Baysox.
Of the seven members with major league experience, three are pitchers. Right-handed pitcher Jim Hoey pitched for
Baltimore in 2006 and 2007, right-handed pitcher Bobby Livingston pitched for Seattle in 2006 and Cincinnati in 2007,
and left-handed pitcher Troy Patton pitched for Houston in 2007. Catcher Guillermo Rodriguez played in 39 games for
the San Francisco Giants in 2007, infielder Melvin Dorta appeared in 15 games for the Washington Nationals in 2006,

Outfielder Dave Krynzel played in a total of 21 games with Milwaukee in 2004 and 2005.
A dominant pitching staff led the Baysox in 2008 and this year should be similar with the return of Jason Berken and the
additions of Jake Arrieta and Brandon Erbe. Berken went 12-4 for the Baysox last year and was named the 17th best
prospect in the organization by Baseball America. The publication also ranked Arrieta the 4th best and Erbe the 6th best

The Baysox will open their 17th season as the class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, April 8, in
Akron. The team will play its first game back home at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday, April 16. Don't miss a
moment of the action as the Baysox attempt to bring home their first Eastern League championship! Ticket packages
are available now at www.baysox.com or by calling the Baysox ticket sales department at (301) 464-4880.
Baysox Drop 09 Opener to Akron
Carlos Santana drove home four runs and Hector Rondon held the Baysox in check over 5.2 innings, spoiling the
opening game for the Baysox at Canal Park in Akron. The Baysox attempted to stage a late rally but the deficit was too
much to overcome as Randy Newsom came on to close the door for a 9-5 Aeros victory.
Akron struck quickly in the bottom first inning as Jose Costanza led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a
passed ball by catcher Guillermo Rodriguez and an error by second baseman Miguel Abreu. Carlos Rivero followed with
a walk putting men on the corners for Santana who drilled the Jason Barken offering over the right field wall to put the
Aeros on top 3-0.
Berken settled down in the 2nd and 3rd innings before giving way to left-hander Ryan Rodriguez, who struggled in his
first appearance giving up six earned runs in his only inning of work. Niuman Romero led off the inning with a single,
followed by back-to-back walks issued to John Drennen and Josh Rodriguez to load the bases. Jose Costanza came to
the plate and stroked an RBI single to left field and Carlos Rivero followed him with a single of his own this time plating
two runs. Beau Mills gave the Aeros their third straight single to make the score 6-0, and was subsequently picked off
first before a Santana sacrifice fly and back-to-back RBI singles by Jared Goedert and Romero left the Baysox down
nine runs heading into the 5th inning.
The Baysox got on the board for their first run of the season in the top of the sixth inning as Jeff Fiorentino led off the
inning with a double and moved over to third on a Melvin Dorta flyout. Brandon Snyder then stroked a single to left
which scored Fiorentino making the score 9-1. The Baysox added another run in the next frame when Miguel Abreu
singled and moved to second on a groundout before Danny Figueroa slapped an RBI single to left.
The top of the eighth inning saw the Baysox make one last effort to get back into the game, as they scored three runs
off Aeros reliever Mike Finocchi. Melvin Dorta doubled and scored on Snyders second RBI single of the night. After a
double play, Ambiorix Concepcion walked and Miguel Abreu singled before Dave Krynzel tripled to score both cutting the
deficit to 9-5. That would be the end of the scoring however as Aeros closer Randy Newsom came on to get the final out
in the eighth inning and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to get the save for Akron.
Baysox relievers Fredy Deza, Ryan Keefer and Chad Thall all held the Aeros scoreless over the last four innings while
allowing just two hits.

COOK, SMOOT AND TONEY RECEIVE CIAA HONORS
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) released its weekly conference softball honor roll today and
senior Ashley Cook (Port Republic, Md., Calvert, College of Southern Maryland), freshman Shanae Smoot (Bel
Alton, Md., LaPlata) and Coach Darrell Toney were named Player of the Week, Offensive Player of the Week and
Coach of the Week respectively.
Cook was last weeks CIAA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week. For games through April 7th, Cook had a six-
game batting average of .429 which included nine hits, 13 RBI and three home runs. Of Cooks three home runs, two
were back-to-back three-run homers in one game versus Columbia Union.
Smoot led the Lady Bulldogs with a .684 batting average and included 13 hits, 16 RBI, one double and four home runs.
Smoot also walked three times and stole two bases.
Toney's accomplishment marks the third consecutive week the first-year coach has been honored by the CIAA. His first
place Lady Bulldogs went a perfect 6-0 for games through April 7th and BSU has won eight straight games and 13 of
their last 14 contests. Bowie State's record stands at 16-14 overall, 13-1 in the CIAA and 4-0 in the Eastern Division.
LADY BULLDOGS BITE LADY BEARS 9-1 AND 15-6
The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs captured another CIAA sweep today, beating the Shaw University Lady Bears
9-1 and 15-6. Both games ended early due to the 8-run mercy rule and ups BSU’s record to 16-4 overall and 12-1 in
the CIAA.
Senior Heather Enders struck out a season-high 10 Lady Bears and junior Kelley Alexander recorded a game-high
three RBI to help lead Bowie State to the 9-1 victory in game one.
Curtisha Jones scored the first run of the game for Shaw in the top of the first inning, but Bowie State’s Alexander put
the home team on top to stay with a two-run home run to left, scoring senior Trisha Corbin from second and making the
score 2-1 Lady Bulldogs.
Shaw (9-13, 9-7 CIAA) managed only one hit for the remainder of game one while Bowie State tallied eight total hits in
the opener. Alexander and freshman Shanae Smoot paced BSU’s Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits each in game one.
Shaw’s Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two on hits by Samantha Bohn, Malta Gumbs and Crystal
Sanders.
Bowie State cut the Shaw 2-0 lead in half in the bottom of the second inning, but Shaw added two more runs in the top
of third, getting two more hits off BSU starting pitcher Tiffany Toney. Unfortunately for Shaw, Bowie State’s offense
came alive pushing four runs across the plate in the third and fourth innings and put the final nail in the coffin with a six-
run fifth inning.
In terms of team hitting, Shaw ended the game with nine hits and Bowie State rocked the Lady Bears’ Sanders for 11
hits. Errors also played in part in the outcome as Shaw committed four in game two.
Bohn, Jones and Gumbs led Shaw with two hits each in the nightcap.
Junior Faline Brown led Bowie State with four RBI in game two and senior Ashley Cook went 3-for-4 from the plate as
BSU completed the sweep of Shaw, winning 15-6 in game two. Toney picked up her first pitching victory of the year,
striking out seven in five innings of work.
LADY BULLDOGS EARN HARD FOUGHT SPLIT AT COLUMBIA UNION
It was tough, but Bowie State pulled out a pair of wins, sweeping Columbia Union College 9-7 and 14-12. Bowie State
improves its record to 14-4 overall.
Bowie State opened up an 8-0 cushion but had to hold on down the stretch to defeat Columbia Union 9-7 in the first
game of a non-conference contest. The game did not end without controversy. CUC’s Jenna Pickel hit a hard grounder
to a diving Tiffany Toney, who fielded the ball and threw over to first for what everyone thought, was the third out.
However, the umpires left the fenced confines of the field only to return a minute later ruling Pickel safe a first. BSU
pitcher Faline Brown maintained her composure and fanned Taylor Machain to close out the game.
Kelley Alexander led Bowie State in game one, going 3-for-4 to go along with two runs. Senior Virginia Hockey and
freshman Shanae Smoot accounted for two hits each and Smoot recorded a game-high four RBI.
Columbia Union out hit Bowie State 13-10 but CUC’s Lady Pioneers committed five errors. Pickel led Columbia Union on
offense, going 4-for-4 and crossed the plate three times.
Bowie State began game two pushing one across in the top of the first inning. Columbia Union countered with four runs
in their half of the inning with BSU assisting by committing two errors.
The Columbia Union lead increased to 7-2 after four innings, but BSU’s Smoot hit a solo home run (4) in the top of the
fifth to close the margin to 7-3. A two-out double to right field by Bowie State’s Alexander scored two and narrowed the
deficit to 7-5.
Columbia Union got one run back in their portion of the fifth, courtesy of another fielding error by the Lady Bulldogs.
However, Bowie State senior Ashley Cook blasted a three-run homer to left field, tying the game at 8-8. Bowie State
took a 9-8 lead when Alexander’s pop up was dropped by CUC’s shortstop, allowing senior Virginia Hockey to score for
the Lady Bulldogs.
BSU’s Toney slapped a single to shortstop, scoring Corbin from third to push the Bowie State lead to 10-8. Corbin
reached on a blooper to short centerfield. Enders stepped to the plate at laced a double to left center, scoring Toney
on the play. Cook duplicated her previous at bat, stroking another three-run homer (6), this time to center field,
extending Bowie State’s lead to 14-8.
Columbia Union made it interesting scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and two runners on
base, Pickel stepped to the plate but struck out swinging to end the game.
Senior Heather Enders (8-2) earned the win, facing 42 batters, striking out six and walked four going the complete
seven innings. Cook was the leaders for Bowie State in the nightcap, going 4-for-5 in game two and was directly
responsible for seven Lady Bulldogs RBI. Alexander and Smoot also had good showing in game two. Alexander
recorded three hits and Smoots had two hits.
Spring football has begun for Bowie State University and new Head Coach Damon Wilson. The BSU Bulldogs should

WE GET LETTERS….
Hi Bill,
I remember "snake hill". It was off of the northern part of 16th street and went into Rock Creek Park. It was a fun road
to learn to drive on if you dared. Happy Spring,
Carolyn Schoenfeld Wilfond RHS "53
Carolyn,
It was a great ride, almost like a roller coaster. You have a great Spring also.
Bill
Bill,
QB Peter Athens that is going to Towson. He played his junior year at St. Mary’s Annapolis, his 1st 2 years he played at
Northern High (SMAC). Just a FYI he went to Huntingtown and not back to Northern because of the coach at Northern.
Dennis
Dennis,
Thanks for the information.
Bill
Bill,
Great column as usual, you may have a scoop when sometime back said that the Redskins could be in a 3 way trade
with Cleveland and Denver—with Jason Campbell going to Cleveland and Brady Quinn going to Denver, with
Washington getting Cutler. Man what a potential improvement.
Fred
Fred,
Owner Danny almost pulled it off, too bad he didn’t.

SPORTS NOTES
Is Michael Vick headed to the Redskins? After all its easy to see owner Danny thinks the Skins need to get another QB
and after his botched attempt to get Cutler blew up in his face, Jason Campbell should see the writing on the wall at
Ashburn.
Nice article in the “Sun” by Jacques Kelly on April 4th about Al Brown and the popular line dance the “Madison”.
Tony Mast has resigned as Lackey HS boys basketball coach after posting a 84-16 record in four years at Lackey.
I wonder if Charger AD Dave Anderson is thinking about former Gwynn Park boys Larry Gandee? Maybe Larry Johnson

I hope the Olympics bring back baseball and women’s softball when they vote in October. I hear PP, TT and Ironhead
