              MCCAFFREY’S WORLD

                                                                           By

                                                                  Bill McCaffrey

I am starting by blasting the newspaper that says it is your “hometown newspaper” the Annapolis Capital.  I realize their
paper is downsizing, they have decent coverage of Navy, U. of Maryland, Ravens, Skins, high school, sailing and even
outdoor sports.  Yes I know they are cutting everywhere even closing their printing in Annapolis but I am really
disappointed when the AACC women’s basketball team is playing a regional tournament at home for a chance to go to
the National JUCO Tournament in Minnesota and the only space they get is a one line saying the tournament is in P.G.
County, the men were in P.G. but the women were playing at home.  More on the men later.

The Anne Arundel CC women won the tournament routing Allegany (PA) 67-41 and edging Westmoreland (PA) 64-59 to
win the NJCAA Region 20 Division 3 Title.  John Wardell is the head coach and nine of his players went to Anne Arundel
County schools, they are:

Jade Hamilton -  North County

Katie Beall – Southern

Chelsea Rohleder – N. County

Ashley Wagner – South River

Yanitza Borrero – Northeast

Jaclyn Nucci – South River

Deanna (Adrienne) Webber – Broadneck

Dannielle Webber – Broadneck

Kristin Tucker – Annapolis Area Christian

Tri-Captains – Molly McCarthy, Ashley Wagner, and Nikelle Kruger

Nucci is a very good player who has the potential to play at a D-1 level.  Wagner is deadly from the outside and handles
the point well, Tucker is just coming into her own and provides boards and defense.  I also think that Chelsea Rohleder
is a very good player who should play more, I think Molly McCarthy, Katie Beall and the Webbers have played well this
season.

Austin Smith coaches the men’s AACC team and they have a big game coming up on Saturday with a chance to further
their season.  This past week they split at PGCC in the Region 20 Tournament.  They beat Steve Hopson’s MJC
Rockville 75-70 but lost to Allegany (PA) JC 69-58.

Again the AACC men’s team is stocked with local high school players and they are:

Justin Brown, Annapolis

Kevin Coates, Annapolis

Ricky Witcher, Meade

Michael Dixon, Severna Park

Josh Gerber, Broadneck

Nahshon Brown, Meade

They have a big playoff game coming up on Saturday, March 7th at home at 1:00 p.m.  It should be a great game and I
hope you’ll come out and support a “hometown” team even though the “hometown” paper doesn’t cover it.

Hoop Notes ---- Congratulations to Brenda Frese and her Lady Terps for winning their first regular season ACC
championship.  Also hats off to Gary Williams for the great coaching job he’s doing down the stretch.

LEWIS STAYS A RAVEN

Oh, my, “Raghead Ray” Lewis is remaining a Raven after no team in the NFL would give him the green or gold chains
that he wanted.  So after several weeks of bad mouthing the Ravens he had to take a “hometown discount” to stay in
Baltimore, so much for how much gold he was going to get in the free agent market (it had to damage his ego) but the
Ravens are cheering in the not so Charm City.  The Ravens should not have re-signed him and then he can go open
another restaurant (whatever happened to the one he used to have in Baltimore, I guess the Raven fans didn’t knock
the doors down to eat what some folks tole me was really bad food).  Oh well Raven fans enjoy cheering the aging vet
as opponents run by him in the 2009 season.

Matt Cassell is the new quarterback in K.C..  Terrell “TO” Owens was cut by the Cowboys, where will he be in the 2009
season D.C. or Baltimore?

The Redskins cut Jason Taylor.  He thinks his dancing will carry him through the rest of his life.

The Ravens lost Jim Leonhard to Rex Ryan and the N.Y. Jets but the Ravens had a huge pick up in six time pro bowl
center Matt Birk from the Vikings.

NATS IMPROVED

Yes I think the Washington Nationals are improved on the field and in the front office.  The big plus in the front office is
that Jim Bowden and Jose Rios are no longer there.

Also it appears that Stan Kasten is going to push to put a little qualify in this stumbling, bumbling organization, maybe
even axing Nats manager  Manny Acta.

I like the Nats batting order with Adam Dunn between Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham with Lastings Milledge and
Christian Guzman batting in front of those three means a lot of fireworks on the upper half of the lineup, develop a
bottom of the order and “Katie bar the door”!

I’d like to see the Nats pick Ivan “Pudge” Rodriquez he would give them another bat and would be great working with the
Nats young catchers.

Pitching looks a little iffy but they have some decent arms in Scott Olsen, Daniel Caberra, John Lannan, and a few
others.  I wonder why Ross Detwiller hasn’t  progressed better.  I wonder how the Nats 2B of the future is doing with the
Marlins, his name was Emilio Bonifacio and wasn’t he from Sante Domingo, DR?  I wonder if he was part of that
Bowden/Rios mess (maybe he is 40 years old)?

Unfortunately the Nats are in a division with the Mets, Braves, Phililes, and Marlins so it looks like the only team that they
could beat out the Marlins.

BALLROOM BOXING AND TKO BOXING PROMOTIONS TEAM UP FOR 2009
Tickets available now at 410 766-7474

Scott Wagner's Ballroom Boxing and Chet Koerner's TKO BOXING Promotions, have teamed up for 2009 to present six
world class professional boxing events this year at Baltimore's Michael's Eighth Avenue as part of the nationally known
"HOMETOWN HEROES TO WORLD CHAMPIONS" series.

Ballroom Boxing is one of the longest running professional boxing series in North America . The upcoming card on April
2nd will be its 93rd spanning thirteen years. Scott Wagner has created and masterminded the highly successful series
since its first show on February 15, 1996.

Said Wagner "We have three exciting shows planned for this spring and if all goes according to plan Ballroom Boxing
and TKO Boxing Promotions will really make its mark in this area at the same time as it establishes itself as one of the
home bases for TKO."

"My father and I have always believed in promoting our "Hometown Heroes", so it will be exciting to work with TKO and
their concept of "HOMETOWN HEROES TO WORLD CHAMPIONS", It's a great fit for both sides."

Ballroom Boxing has featured world champions Hasim Rahman, Kermit Cintron, Nate Campbell, Wayne Braithwaite,
Vincent Pettway, Luis Collazo and has been an important part of the development of local standouts Lamont Pearson,
heavyweight Tony Thompson, Darnell "The Ding A Ling Man" Wilson, and Teddy Reid, as well as featuring rising stars
on their way up such as Yuri Foreman, Mike Arnaoutis, Mario Santiago, Roman Martinez and Andre Dirrell.

Said Koerner, President of TKO Boxing Promotions "'We're thrilled to work with the Ballroom Boxing team as we move
into the Baltimore area with our "HOMETOWN HEROES TO WORLD CHAMPIONS" series. Boxing fans across the
country are packing venues to see their favorite local fighters in world class action and that's our

commitment to Baltimore fight fans."

Ballroom Boxing and TKO Boxing Promotions first worked together on the annual Jonathan Ogden Foundation benefit
boxing show this past October 30th and followed that up with an outstanding card on November 20th at Michael's Eighth
Avenue with the relationship now turning into a strategic alliance. The promoters will work together to continue to
showcase the best area talent in the context of the world class professional fighters that are being promoted by TKO.

Said Koerner "We had a packed house on November 20th and the passion the fans had for the fighters really drew me
to making this deal with Scott. Working with the legacy of great fights in the Ballroom Boxing series over the last thirteen
years, starting with these six shows we will continue the standard of terrific events they've had over the years."

Through the years, Wagner and Ballroom Boxing have stayed away from signing fighters. Scott Wagner realized early
on that if he signed a fighter and they developed into a world class prospect that in order to take the fighter to the next
level that he would have to sign the fighter over to a promoter with national visibility.

Said Wagner "With this strategic alliance with TKO, I can now sign a fighter, develop him together with TKO, and if he
really becomes a top pro, with TKO's cross country reach, we can promote him nationally. This will be a very exciting
year for not only Ballroom Boxing, but also Ballroom Battlefield. And working with TKO will allow my firm to have greater
reach and greater strength going forward."

Long time matchmaker for Ballroom Boxing, Chris Middendorf, is also a partner and the matchmaker for TKO. "Chris
knows how the shows work here and what sort of quality that our fans demand. With him already working for both
Ballroom and TKO, this will be a seamless transition" continued Wagner.

Scott Wagner has been spearheading the drive in Maryland to include MMA, which passed and went into law in January.
Wagner has also planned an ambitious schedule of MMA fights this year under the name Ballroom Battlefield.

Further information on Scott Wagner's Ballroom Boxing can be viewed at their website, www.ballroomboxing.com

Formed in early 2008, Chet Koerner's Las Vegas based TKO BOXING Promotions stable includes; heavyweight Lenroy
Thomas, super middleweight Joey Gilbert, middleweights Elvin Ayala, Albert Onolunose and James Countryman, junior
middleweights Bastie Samir and Anthony Thompson, welterweight Juan Buendia and

Raul Tovar, junior welterweights Jonathan Gover, Francisco Contreras and Hastings Bwayla, lightweights Rolando
Reyes and Terrance Crawford, featherweights Matt Remillard, Carney Bowman, Delvin Plascencia, Rafael Lora and
Maxwell Awaku, super bantamweights Rafael Valenzuela and Carlos Reyes.

UNDERSTANDING DYSTONIA

Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes muscles in the body to pull or spasm, affecting one or more parts of the
body.

Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder after Parkinson’s Disease and Tremor, affecting more than
300,000 people in North America. It is often misunderstood by the public and misdiagnosed by doctors. One-third of
dystonia patients are children, but dystonia can affect anyone at any time.

It is not fatal, but it can be debilitating.

There is no known cure for dystonia.

Current treatments can vary in effectiveness.

WE GET LETTERS…

Bill,
In case you haven’t been in touch with Margie, I have some latest news.  I need to ask a favor of you.  Please put her
and her son, George on your list of people that need prayer.  He is in John Hopkins fighting for his life at this time.  I
talked with her this morning and she is holding together, barely.  His medical problems were mounting up and he was
going to see a new doctor on Tuesday. Monday night, he hobbled out on the porch to have a smoke and fell getting in
the door and hit his head. Didn’t let his mother know so by the time she was aware he was injured and she was able to
get him to the hospital, 12 hours had lapsed. He has extensive bleeding on the brain, so he is in an induced coma to
stop the bleeding and try to determine what to do next. From what I understand, he was transported via Medi-vac to
John Hopkins and she is encouraged by this. They do have him stabilized but it still is a waiting game. If it reaches the
brain stem it might be too late to save him. The trip back and forth from Oxon Hill to Baltimore is very taxing. Thank God
she’s a believer. George has had one stroke already and other multiple medical difficulties, he needs a miracle. He is
also a carbon copy of his father, Margie said that it was like looking Perry in the face when she first saw George hooked
up to all the stuff. Thanks for the prayers, its times like this that I wished I lived closer. I’m worried about her traveling
back and forth to Baltimore on a daily basis alone.  As I get updates I will let you know.
Barb

Bill,
Margie Fels McCormick was married to Perry McCormick who passed 10 years ago, George is a carbon copy of his
dad.  Particularly hard on Margie and it doesn’t look good for this young man, he is critical now.  Thanks for prayers for
them both.
Barb

Dear Barb,
Thanks for the information I am praying for them both.
Bill

Bill,
Exclusive informational update on better boxing for you in my blog http://BetterBoxingInfor.bolgspot.com.  If you like my
blog, please add to your bookmarks.
Thanks
Mary Geetha

Dear Bill,
Many years ago I attended Seton Hall Prep in South Orange NJ. We had a whale of a football team vying for perennial
State Championships. The Prep back then was on the campus of Seton Hall University which did not have a football
team and thus the only gridiron game on campus was the Prep. They were coached by a Tony Verducci who was a
superior leader of men and outstanding football coach. His record was an outstanding 213-76-16.
Frank Verducci, Notre Dame's new offensive line coach is Tony's son. Frank also had an uncle that was a football
coach. It would seem that Frank has championship genes in his veins. Congratulations to Charlie Weis for selecting
such a fine talented person. It helps of course that he was born on St Patrick's Day.
Jerry Todd

Dear Jerry,
Thanks for the information.
Bill

Bill,
With sadness I must report the passing of Stan Gallup long time member of the ABC.  Stan’s latest affiliation was with the
San Juan Pueblo Boxing Commission in New Mexico.  There are complete articles on www.fighrtnews.com and www.
newmexicoboxing.com.  I recently had the opportunity to reunite with Stan in November, we had the opportunity to catch
up a bit.  You will remember that Stan until recently never missed an ABC annual meeting.  The ABC family wishes to
express its deepest sympathy to Stan’s family.

Hi Bill,
Still enjoy your column and thought you might like an update on the Pirates. They are now 15-12 overall and 6-9 in the
Big East. They have only three games left, at home with Pittsburgh and then away against Louisville and Cincinnati. I
doubt that they will make the NCAA tourney but have an outside chance of landing a berth in the NIT. Next year they
should be ranked, as they have a number of transfers coming into the program, who are dynamite. This year the Big
East tourney will have all 16 teams from the conference included and can be seen on ESPN2 starting Tuesday March 10.
Jerry

Dear Jerry,
Thanks for the information – GO Pirates!
Bill

Bill,
I only learned about Lance Klein a few days ago. He is in the hospital and suffering from a brain tumor, whether it is
cancerous or not has to be confirmed.  I talked to him today and he was thankful that people are praying for him, he
sounded good but tired.  One of his friends is Tom Gantt and he may be able to tell you more. His e-mail is
Tgantt44@aol.com if he gives you any more information please let me know.  The July 18th reunion is for the class of
1959 but they will admit some others.  I’ll send you the information needed for that later today
Elaine

Dear Elaine,
I’ll find out what I can.  Let me know more about the reunion.
Bill

Bill,
This is my latest blog on immigration, it deals with HB 612.  It was heard this past week in Annapolis.  I think some of your
people may find it of interest.  Thanks
Andy

Dear Andy,
Go get em Tiger.

Sports notes

Did you hear Anita “Harpo” Marx’s interview with NASCAR Matt Kenseth when she asked him if NASCAR was a sport?
Dud!  I guess she doesn’t watch ESPN or read the sports page, of course it’s a sport dummy.  This from a person who
disses NHL hockey (even tho the Capitals are only 30 miles away and have one of the NHL’s best team) and didn’t she
diss boxing lately, come on sport fans give her the hook, give us Chris Cole or Amber Theoharis in her place or Ed
Frankovic.
