Thelma Altemus, 85, a secretary who worked for the National
Geographic Society from 1969 to 1995, died April 4 at the Fort
Washington Health and Rehabilitation Center of complications from liver
cancer.
Mrs. Altemus, a longtime Fort Washington resident, was a secretary for
the Prince George's County public school system for many years before
joining the National Geographic Society.
Thelma Herbert was born in Washington and graduated from Anacostia
High School in 1943.
Her husband, Herbert Altemus Jr., whom she married in 1945, died last
year.
Survivors include two children, Ronald Altemus of Alexandria and Susan
Littlehales of Silver Spring; four grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
