Phyllis Uhler Figurowski

PHYLLIS UHLER FIGUROWSKI - passed away in Tarpon Springs, FL
Monday, June 3, 2002 after a long illness. She was born Oct. 19, 1942 at
Doctor's Hospital in Wash., D.C. She attended Ketcham El., Kramer Jr.
Hi. and graduated from
Anacostia High School in 1960.
Phyllis worked 38 years for the Immigration and Naturalization Service in
D.C., Rome, Italy and Haiti. She retired in Feb. '99 and moved to
Tarpon Springs, FL.

She attended the Church of the Holy Communion in Congress Heights
for 18 years and then St Andrew's Episcopal in College Park for 27 years.

Survivors include her sister, Kathy Uhler Pickard (AHS '62) of Tarpon
Springs, FL; 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren and many, many friends.

Phyllis will be remembered for her smile, her laughter, and her great
sense of humor. Thus, when you think of Phyllis ....., laugh! She would
want us to.

CORLISS F. KING - a 1961 graduate of AHS passed away at age 59.
He was married twice, first to Deborah and second to Garrielle Toddy
King. He had a brother, Larry and a sister Kay.

VIRGINIA THILL PERKINS - Passed away August 3, 2002 from a
stroke at age 67.



She retired 8 years ago as Administrative Assistant at Pivot Point
International.



Ginny was an avid music lover and incredible singer all her life.



She is survived by 4 daughters, a son and 5 grandchildren. To see a

VIRGINIA OGILVY  - (AHS Teacher) passed away in September of
2002. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lester; 2 children,
Margie Franz and David Ogilvy.

EILEEN KOONTZ - Passed away at her home in Davidsonville, MD on
September 26, 2002. She was the spouse of John D. Koontz a former
teacher and Principal at Kramer Jr. High and later Principal at Anacostia
High School. Survivors include her husband John D. Koontz, son John
W. Koontz and daughter Dr. Theresa Noland.

WILBER LEO EPPARD - Passed away at age 68. He is survived by
siblings Everett, Kenneth, Mary, Leonard and John.

EDWARD W. CHAILLET - Passed away November 18, 2002 at age 82
in Elizabeth City, NC. He was a native of Washington, D.C. and an AHS
graduate. He retired from the D.C. Police Departmet in the 70's as a
detective seargent. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and fought
at the Battle of the Bulge. He is the receipient of a Bronze Star.



Survivors include his wife Nancy, 2 children Ned and Linda,
2step-children Karen Shotwell and Cindy Bowling, five sisters, Jean
Wrnst, Betty Hall, Joan Stanley, Annette Crites and Nancy Chaillet, four
brothers, James, George, Charles and Jack and eight grandchildren.

EDWARD  L. "ED" GATEWOOD - Passed away March 20, 2003 at
age 68. He was born in Wash., D.C. and graduated from Anacostia High
School in 1953. He majored in History and Political Science, wrote for
"The Hatchet" and played on the baseball team while at George
Washington Univ. He worked for NSA and for Senator Jeremiah Denton
(AL) . He recieved a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the
University of Colorado. He taught Management courses at Benjamin
Franklin Univ. in Wash., D.C. He retired after 40 years of service at
NSA.



He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gloria; 3 children Tracy, Joseph
and Dana; grandson, Sean McTernan and a sister, Doris Gegner.

JOSEPH "JAY" LONG - Passed away on May 12, 2003 after a short
hospitalization. Jay graduated from AHS in 1958. He had 3 younger
siblings that also attended AHS: Jerry, Jim and Judy.

JOHN W. CHRISTMAN -  Passed away June 3, 2003 in Florida at the
age of 76. He attended Anacostia High School for 3 years but graduated
from Charlotte Hall. His brother, George graduated from AHS in 1943.
He was a resident of Clinton, Md and worked for the C&P Telephone
Company.

RAYMOND FRANCIS SELBY, Jr. - Passed away June 9, 2003. Born
8-26-25, he attended Anacostia High School but left before graduating to
serve in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Pasadena in the Pacific from
1943 to 1946. He boxed while in the Navy and played semi-pro football
for the Anacostia Eagles after returning home. Mr Selby was formerly a
meat cutter at Captain Kidd's Grocery in Deal, MD where he lived for 43
years.  He is survived by his wife, Mildred Agnes Phillips, a son,
Raymond, a daughter Barbara Ann bell and 4 great-grandchildren.

JOHN D. KOONTZ -  Passed away June 3, 2003 at age 86. Mr Koontz
graduated from Wilson Teacher's College and received a Master's Degree
in Education from George Washington University. He began his career as
a teacher at Langley Jr. High and was transferred to Kramer Jr. High as a
Physical Education teacher. He became Assistant principal at Kramer Jr.
High, Coolidge High School and, Principal at Taft Jr. High and Anacostia
High School. He went on to become Deputy Superintendent of D.C.
Schools.



After retiring from the D.C. school system he developed "Harbor Hills", a
waterfront community in Davidsonville, MD. His hobby in later years
was carving wooden duck decoys.  He is survived by his son John W.
Koontz, daughter Dr. Theresa Nolan, 6 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. He was loved and respected by all of the students
and staff he came into contact with.

SANDY  (FRYE) DONRUSSELLO - Born April 23, 1944, Sandy
passed away March 29, 2001 in Mechanicsville, MD at age 57.  She
graduated from Anacostia High School in 1962.



She is survived by her son, Russ, of Oceanside, CA, 2 grandchildren, 2
sisters Linda (Frye) Durst and Jane (Frye) Armstrong both of MD and
brother Mark Frye of Monticello, FL.



Sandy will always be remembered for her sense of humor, smile and a
good laugh. She loved family get-togethers where everyone would laugh,
joke and have a great time. She loved laughter.

MARIE (PETERSON) JOHNSTON - Passed away January 19, 1996.
She was born in MN in 1909. On June 21, 1947, she married F.
Kennerson Johnston. Mrs. Johnston taught school for 44 years until her
retirement in 1967. 25 of those years were in the D.C. school system.
She taught Latin American History at AHS. In 1965 she was given a
citation by Dr. Jose Mora, Secretary General of the Organization of
American States, for promoting understanding of Latin America.



The Johnstons moved to Mt. Holly, VA and Mrs. Johnston taught in
Warsaw, VA from 1967 to 1975.



The Johnstons moved to WI  where she was very active in a variety of
activities.

JAMES E. ROBERSON - AHS class of 1948 passed away at INOVA
Fairfax Hispital on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 of lung cancer. After
graduation he served in the Air Force in the Korean War and from there
went into Civil Service. Among other departments, he worked for the
Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Commerce. After retiring
from government work he went to work for Fairfax County
Transportation in the 80's. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years
Grethe, children Vibeke Bansal, Anne Roberson and Kathy Phillips, 5
grandsons, and 3 greatgrandsons.

WILLIAM LINDEN, Jr. -  AHS Class of 1948, who was a television
news producer and director for "CBS Evening News" with Walter
Kronkite and Dan Rather, died of ventricular fibrillation on June 5, 2002
at Reston Hospital in VA. Mr. Linden had been with CBS for 20 years
when he retired. His work there included producing and directing "Face
the Nation", live coverage of the Watergate hearings, national political
conventions, President Nixon's resignation, Gerald Ford's swearing in as
President, the Iran Contra hearings and the Apollo space shots for which
he was pool Director for the 3 major networks. After retireing, he was
producer and director for PBS of the nomination of Clarence Thomas to
the U.S. Supreme Court.



A resident of Reston, he was born in Washington, D.C. and graduated
from Anacostia high School and Princeton University. In 1953 he began
his career in broadcasting  as a stage manager with WTOP television. In
1963 he joined ABC for shows such as "Issues and Answers" and NASA
space shots. He was a member of St Paul's and Emmanuel Episcopal
churches in D.C. Hobbies included golf, tennis, singing and dancing. His
marriage to Helen Ware Linden ended in divorce. He is survived by two
children, William E. Linden III of Ashburn, VA and Elizabeth Linden
Rubin of North Bethesda, MD and, one granddaughter.

GENEVIEVE  "GENNY" (LYONS) LAWRENCE - Genny graduated
from AHS in June of 1950 and married  Jefferson Lawrence (AHS '50).
She passed away 8-28-96 in Rockville, MD leaving 6 children and 7
grandchildren.

JAMES McARTHUR - 66, died of cancer November 21, 2003 at his
home in Bethesda, MD. After graduating from Anacostia he attended
D.C. Teacher's College. He received a master's degree from The
University of Oregon. James served in the Army from '55 - '57. He
taught math at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School for 35 years. He is
survived by his brother, Douglas (also an AHS graduate), his wife,
children and grandchildren.

LINDA SHANDALOW RUBBIN - AHS class of '56, died of cancer at
her home in Silver Spring, MD on November 13, 2003. Born in NY,
Linda was raised in Washington, D.C.  After graduating from AHS she
attended the University of Maryland for 2 years. She then moved to
Hawaii where her husband was stationed. She returned to the D.C. area
in 1960 where she raised her family. She was a volunteer with Hadassah
and eventually became Vice Pres of marketing with a food broker. In
1990 she worked as a personal shopper with The Hecht store in
Bethesda. She is survived by husband Ronald, 4 daughters, a brother and
sister and seven grandchildren.

FREDERICK PAVES -  Passed away April 8, 1966. After graduating
from AHS in '59, Fred joined the U.S. Marines. He was discharged in
1963. At the time of his death, in an auto accident, he was a hunting
guide for a pack guide company. He was single. His twin brother Dan
said " It was a tradjic loss, but he left this earth a little better than he
found it ".

JOHNNY BENSON - A 1956 AHS graduate,  Johnny passed away April
8, 1960 due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He  was 22
years old.  He had owned his Corvette only a few months before the
accident on Old Fort Road in Oxon Hill, MD. Johnny was on the AHS
football team and enjoyed weight lifting, hunting and the outdoors. He
entered the "Mr. D.C." contest in 1958 and came in second place.  At the
time of his death, he was an employee of National Cash Register (NCR)
in D.C.  Johnny was the only son. He was survived by his parents Mabel
and John C. Benson and 3 sisters, MaryAnna (AHS '48), Janis (AHS '50)
and Liz Benson (AHS '58).

STEPHANIE ANN WASILE MUMM - Passed away at St Mary's
Hospital in Reno, NV in May of 2004 after a long illness. She was born
in 1945 in Dallas, TX but spent most of her formative years in
Washington, D.C. with her mother, Jeanne C. Wasile, who was widely
known as "Princess Crow Woman of the Blackfeet Nation". Her father,
former Army Air Corps Navigator Stephen Wasile (deceased), and
brother Warren Conrad Wasile (deceased), and her sister, Jana Lynn
Wasile were designated "All American Family of 1961" representing
Washington, D.C.



Stephanie graduated from Anacostia High School and was a scholorship
student at East Carolina University where she was President of her
Sorority and was honored as a cellist.



Prior to moving to the Reno area she was a legislative aide to US Senator
Howard W. Cannon, (D-NV).



She was very active in Nevada politics, Indian Affairs and Service
Organizations.



Her legacy will be her family to whom she devoted her life.

CLAUDIA 'SUE'  (EDWARDS)  POWERS -  widow of  U-2 spy plane
pilot Gary Francis Powers, died at the age of 68 on June 17, 2004 in Las
Vegas, NV. Sue graduated from Anacostia High School in 1954.



Mrs. Powers worked for the CIA where she met Gary in 1962 after his
release from a Soviet prision. She worked with her son, Gary Francis
Powers, Jr., to obtain The Distinguished Flying Cross and the DOD
Prisoner of War medals posthumously for her husband.  She also helped
her son establish The Cold War Museum, a traveling exhibit that honors
Powers, and,was an honorary chairman of The Silent Heroes of The
Cold War National Memorial Committee. She had been a resident of Las
Vegas since 1994 and a longtime volunteer at its Atomic Testing
Museum. She is survived by her son, a daughter from a previous
marriage, and 2 grand- children. Gary  Powers, Sr. died  in 1977 when
his KNBC-TV news helicopter crashed in Encino, CA

HOWARD WALTER BELL -  AHS '62, passed away in his sleep the
last week of June, 2004 of a heart attack.  He is survived by his son
Brian and his daughter Tracy Miller and 2 grandchildren, Hanna and
Jacob. He is also survived by his 2 brothers Roger (AHS '60), Kenneth,
and his sister Joyce Zager. Howard worked for the I.R.S. since
graduating from Ben Franklin College. He resided in Accokeek, MD. He
cherished riding his Harley Davidson "Nelly Bell" to places like the
Sturgis, SD and Myrtle Beach, SC Bike Week each year.

CHARLES RALPH MORRIS -  An AHS graduate, Charles served in the
Army from 1960 to 1962 as a rifleman in The Old Guard, the President's
personal honor guard at Fort McNair.



He worked for Safeway for 35 years and then at Murray's Steak
Warehouse as a security guard and for P.G. County as a substitute bus
attendant.



He was a lay reader at Forestville Memorial United Methodist Church in
Forestville, MD.  He also portrayed the disciple "Matthew" in the
church's Easter production of The Last Supper for several years.



He enjoyed bowling with a league, watching and playing sports, word
puzzles, playing cards and listening to music played by his family.



Survivors include his wife, Barbara L. (Brubaker) Morris,  3 children and
4 grandsons.

ROBERT L. CHARUHAS AHS '59 -   (Robert changed his last name to
Winston)

Robert Winston died suddenly at his home in Naples, FL on January 7,
2006.



He was the President/Owner of First Financial Planners for Seniors in
Bonita Springs, FL and a was a charter member of The Bay Presbyterian
Church in Bonita Springs, FL.



Bobby was active in many charitable organizations and was on the Board
of Our Father's Soup Kitchen, as well as a member of The Gideon
Society.



He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kris, his daughters Scherice
McGill and Debby Brown, his grandaughters, Kirstin Brown and Tahlia
Rossi and his sisters, Helen (Charuhas) Gleason and Diane (Charuhas)

RALPH WENTZEL - Ralph graduated from Anacostia High School in
1958. He passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on April 27, 2006. He is
survived by his wife, Gaby, 2 children and his brother Arleigh, also an
AHS graduate.

CHARLES "CHIC" LEAPLEY - Chic passed away suddenly the
weekend of May 20-21, 2006. He was a trieless worker maintaining

THOMAS BUCKNER TUELL - 1958 AHS graduate, passed away at
his home in Chicago, IL May 22, 2006 at age 65. Son of Ethel Tuell and
brother of the late Lawerence Tuell. Mr Tuell is survived by many
cousins, including Betty Durrer of King George, VA and Amanda Fessler
of Phoenix, AZ; 5 Godchildren, Jennifer Herren Gatesman, Elizabeth
Herren, Paula Tate, Charles Webster and Rowe Webster; and many dear
friends.



Mr. Tuell received his Batchelor of Arts degree from Washington and
Jefferson College in Washington, PA. He served in the U.S. Navy where
he reached the rank of Lieutenant JG. He worked for Southern Railways
and the Santa Fe Railroad prior to joining Merrill Lynch where he
worked for many years, retiring as Executive VP in 1988. He was buried
at sea in a private Naval ceremony. Contributions may be made to the
Paralyzed Veterans of America.

JERRY BOWMAN - AHS class of 1951, born in 1931, passed away on
July 20 2006 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Mary Lee
Bowman, 7 children, 11 grandchildren and 4 greatgrandchildren.

A. J. LAMB - Assistant Principal and then Principal of AHS in the 50's
and 60's passed away at the age of 92 in December of 2006.
JOANN  (MARCOPULOS) WRIGHT - On February 3rd, 2007, beloved
wife of the late Dennis R. Wright; loving mother of Michelle Aceto
(Fiance Daniel Knight); grandmother of Courtney, Anthony and William;
sister of Donna, Ted and Bill Marcopulos, daughter-in-law of Mattie J.
Wright.
LOIS W. ROBEY - Age 76, passed away on January 28, 2006 in Falls
Church, VA. She is survived by her daughter Charlene Allport League;
son Charles L. Allport (Sandra); two stepdaughters, two stepsons, two
grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, three great step-grandchildren;
sisters April W. Spruell and Carol Holmes-Manchester; former son-in-law
William League.

CHARLES WENDELL CURTIS  - Owner of Curtis Brother's Furniture,
and the man responsible for The Curtis Brother's Chair, passed away in
March of 2007 at age 82.

MILT GRANT -  Washington, D.C. radio and TV personality in the 50's
and 60's passed away at his Ft. Lauderdale, FL home in April of 2007 at
age 83.

IRIS T. RACHE - 76, a former psychologist with the D.C. Department
of Corrections who shifted careers in the early 1980's and for 2 decades
sold real estate for Weichert Realtors and Long and Foster, died of lung
cancer March 10, 2007 at Holy Cross Hospital.



Born in Brooklyn, NY to Russian immigrant parents, Ms Rache spent all
but her first 5 years living in the District. She graduated from Anacostia
High School in 1948 and attended GW University and American U.
where she obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology.





Her first professional job was counseling female prisioners for the D.C.
Department of Corrections where she spent 6 years as a staff
psychologist at the Lorton facility for women. She was credited with
ushering in innovative rehabilitation programs to allow inmates to leave
the facility to attend college and hold jobs.



In the mid 1960's, she was Director of Counseling for the Districts
Neighborhood Youth Corps, a federally funded work training program
run by United Planning Organization. She left a few years later to run
another anti-poverty program The Neighborhood Youth Corps in Fairfax
county.



She opened a children's clothing store on Capital Hill in the 70's and later
ran a crafts business from her home. Active in civic affairs, Ms Rache
held fundraisers  for Democratic political candidates and, contributed to
charitable organizations. She leaves no immediate survivors.
LESLIE J. LUMPKIN - Passed away February 25, 2007 at NOVA
hospital at the age of 60. She attended Orr Elememtary, Kramer Jr High
and Anacostia High School. She was a Spanish teacher in the PG County
School System for a number of years. Leslie is survived by her mother,
Frances, her husband of 24 years, Jack Jakubowski, and her son.

THEODORE BRITTON, JR. - 1949 AHS graduate, recently of
McLean, VA, died Sunday July 1, 2007 at Virginia Hospital Center.
Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Yager Britton; father of Theodore
Britton, III, William Fredric Britton and Elizabeth Britton Heath.; brother
of Martha Courington. Also survived by 6 grandchildren.

GEORGE P. WOODBURN, Jr. - A 1940 AHS graduate, George passed
away May 13, 1991. He was married in 1946 and had 2 daughters.
George served in the Navy as a deep-sea diver during WW II.
JAMES S. FAULKNER - of Dunkirk, MD passed away October 2,
2007. Jimmy was the catcher on the AHS varsity baseball team
graduating in 1949. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Nutwell), sons
David, John and Steven, daughter Rachel Meinhardt, brothers Robert
(AHS '51) and Donald, and 8 grandchildren.
JOE WALKER - passed away November 20, 2007 in Luray, VA. He
was a 1958 AHS grad and a retired dectective with The Metropolitan
Police Department.
LINDA LADD HAGENBUSCH - Passed away May 18, 2007 of a heart
atack. She was a 1964 AHS grad. Survivors include her husband, son
and daughter. Her friends will remember her as a kind, friendly and
loving person.
RUSSELL A. LOMBARDY - Passed away December 30, 2007 in
Longmont CO.  He was 89 years old and a former resident of Clinton,
MD.



Mr. Lombardy was teacher, coach and administrator in the D. C.  public
schools from 1951 until his retirement in 1977.



An avid golfer,  in retirement he was a weekend starter at Twin Shields
golf course in MD. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel,
and his second wife, Pearl.



He is survived by his son Russ of Longmont, CO, daughters Diane
Beckham of Berwyn Heights, MD and Debbie Gaspar of Layonsville,
MD and 5 grandchildren.

FRANCES EDWARDS HALE - Passed away September 17, 2008 at
age 101. She was born in Edwardsville, VA to the late John and Maude
Edwards. She was preceded in death by her husband Oswald K. Hale, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Oswald K. Hale, III (Mary) of Richmond,
VA and  daughter, Katheryne Hale West (Ralph) of Arlington, VA; neices
and nephews, 5 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren.



She graduated from Mary Washington University and taught math and
science for 43 years, 33 at Kramer Jr. High and 10 years at Stephen
Deccatur Jr. High in Prince Georges County. She was a member of
Ryland Methodist Church in D.C. and Boulevard Methodist Church in
Richmond, VA. She was a member of ADK Educational Sorority.



A funeral service was held on Saturday September 20, 2008 at  Gideon
Baptist Church, Village, VA with interment following.
JIMMY DOUGLAS - 1948 Graduate of AnacostiaHigh School passed
away September 18, 2008. He lived in Rockville, MD. He is survived by
his wife Pat, sons James, John and David and 6 grandaughters.
MARY (GUTHRIE) SYLVIA - Died at the age of 63 of natural causes
on October 14, 2008 at a hospice facility in The Villages, FL. Mary
touched countless lives as a beautician for over 30 years. She was born
Novenber 10, 1944 and raised in Anacostia in Southeast, D.C. Mary was
a 1963 graduate of Anacostia High School. She lived in the Washington
area for over 60 years. She is survived by her husband, Edward; her son
and daughter-in-law Brett and Jenny Ayers; 2 grandchildren, Matthew
and Jadon. She was the second youngest of 7 children. Her siblings are
Dewey and Ann Guthrie, Ben and Betty Guthrie, Peggy and Fred Foster,
Barbara and Bob Taylor, Billy and Susanne Guthrie, Dixie Guthrie and
Mark Trusheim.  



Services were held on Wednesday October 22nd at Robert E. Evans
Funeral Home in Bowie, MD. Interment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
THOMAS VICTOR FULLER -  Passed away March 9, 2009 at his
home in Forest, VA. Tommy was a 1959 Anacostia graduate. He was the
son of  Charles and Virginia (Tulley) Fuller and  was the loving husband
of the late Gloria Kirby Fuller for 32 years.



Tommy graduated from GW University where he was a member of Pi
Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a retired pharmacist with Kroger.



He was a lover of nature, bird watching, golf and astronomy and was
devoted to the Blackwater Creek Trail where he enjoyed running and
walking with friends.



He is survived by a son Craig of Stockbridge, GA; a daughter Jeannette
of Anchorage, AK; a stepson Rodney Wade of Tampa, FL; a
stepgrandson Wesley Wade; a sister Virginia Fuller McEwen and
husband Bruce of Albany, NY; special friend Ed Samples and other
relatives and friends.

NANCY ANN FRESEN WHITNEY RICE - Passed away March 11,
2008. She was a 1948 AHS graduate. She is survived  by her husband of
17 years Greg Rice; 3 sons and 1 daughter ; 2 step daughters and 8
grandchildren.
LEONARD WAYNE STEVENS - Passed away March 26, 2009 at
Hospice of the Chesapeake Mandarin House in Harwood, MD of a brain
tumor. He was a 1958 AHS graduate.



He is survived by his wife Cheryl Lynn, former wife Judith and the late
Sue Heflin Stevens; sons Christopher and Craig and daughter Connie
(Canfield); stepchildren Jennifer, Joanne and Jordan Marshall as well as
brother Herbert and sister Suzanne.

Wayne leaves numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends with smiles,
laughter, love and kindness.



Wayne learned the printing trade from teacher and mentor A. J. Lamb at
AHS. He was a well respected printer in the D.C. area, retiring in 2006.
He loved spending time with family and friends and looked forward to
them visiting him at his home in Mt. Ida, Arkansas.



Wayne was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard Reserves and
was a member of Calvert Elks Lodge #2620 in Prince Frederck, MD.

JACK NIMITZ - Jazz baritone sax player who played in the Woody
Herman and Stan Kenton big bands passed away June 16, 2009. Jack
was a 1948 AHS graduate.



He began playing clarinet at an early age and alto sax at age 14. He
performed professionally at The Howard Theater while still a teenager.



Jack fell in love with the baritone sax and bought his first one at age 20
and 3 years later was playing baritone in Woody Herman's band.
Through the 50's he played with Herman, Stan Kenton and Herbie Mann.



He moved to CA in the early 60's and established himself as a first rate
studio musician playing with Benny Carter, Gerald Wilson and the
Lighthouse All Stars. He was in the Charlie Parker tribute "Supersax".



His first album as a leader was the 1995 session on Fresh Sound records
called "Confirmation" which focused heavily on bebop which Jack
described as "The most sophisticated  form of jazz ...., it's very
challenging, but also rewarding, because it feels so good when it happens".

JOHN "BUCK" BUCKLEY  - Passed away in July of 2009. Although he
was not an AHS grad, many AHS boys from the Congress Heights area
will remember him as a football coach in the 50's.

LORRAINE M. (JOURDANT) PROHASKA - Passed away August 11,
2009. She was a 1950 AHS graduate. Beloved wife of the late Laddie
Prohaska. Mother of Laddie, Jr., (pattie), Cheryl, David (Debbie),
Timothy, Matthew (Bonni Goeddel) ProhaskaRobin (ross) Juergens.
Sister of Charles Jourdant, AHS class or 1949, Kenneth, Robert and the
late Steven Talbert. Sister-in-law of Charlotte (Prohaska) Swingle, AHS
class of 1948. She had 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3
step grandchildren.

MEL WHITE - Anacostia High School class of 1948 passed away
November 17, 2009 at the Berlin Nursing Center, MD.



Mel was retired from Washington Gas and Light Co.



He is survived by his wife Barbara, three sons, a daughter, 3
stepdaughters 15 grand children and 13 great grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by a son, daughter, his first wife and a stepson.

PATRICIA ANNE (FAIRCLOTH) FREESE - Anacostia High School
class of 1958, passed away on December 14, 2009 at her home in
Layton, Utah. Born July 7, 1940 in Washington, D.C., she was a
founding member of the Debs Sorority from which she made many
lifelong friends. Pat retired in 1995 after 23 years of Federal Civillian
Service.



She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne; 2 daughters Su and
Sharon; sister, Jodi; and 5 grandchildren.
THELMA ALTEMUS -  A 1943 Anacostia High School grad, passed
away on April 4, 2010.
BETTY (ATTEBERRY) THORNE -  A 1948 Anacostia High School
grad, passed away on April 16, 2010.
CARL ELLIS ROSS, JR. -  A 1949  Anacostia High School grad, passed
away April 1, 2010. Carl was a pitcher on the Indians baseball team. He
served 2 years in the Army and worked as a pressman for the
Department of Defence Printing until retirenment.



He is survived by a daughter, Sandra; a son Carl and a grandson.




LOIS LOLITA (SMITH) GALE -  A 1959 Anacostia High School
Graduate, Lois passed away on January 3, 2010.  Her daughter, Donna,
describes her mother as "a woman of God, integrity, wisdom, joy, peace,
humbleness and lots of love". Classmates are thankfull that we got to see
her one more time when she was able to attend her 50th class reunion in
2009.
FRANK H. DeCOLA - Passed away September 20, 2004 at age 63.
Husband of Kathryn; father of AmyClaire Pierce and Daniella DeCola;
brother of Charles DeCola and the late Michael DeCola; Son of the late
Humphrey F. and Dorothy DeCola of Washington, D.C.

CLAUDIA "SUE" POWERS - 1954 graduate of AHS, Mrs. Powers
passed away June 17, 2004 in Las Vegas, NV at age 68.



She was the husband of Francis Gary Powers, a U-2 pilot who was shot
down over The Soviet Union  on May 1, 1960.



With her son, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., she helped establish the Cold
War Museum, a traveling exhibit that honors her husband. She was
honorary chairman of the Silent Heroes of the Cold War National
Monument Committee.



She is survived by her son and a daughter.

DAVID EDWARD GRAGAN, (Lt. Col. USMC retired) - Passed away
June 7, 2010. David was born July 12, 1928 to the late Arthur and Ruth
Gragan. He graduated from AHS in 1946. He was a 30 year veteran of
the Marine Corps, serving in both Korea and Vietnam. He received a BA
and a Masters from the Univ. of Pittsburgh. After retiring from the Corps
he was a counselor for the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation in
Washington, PA for 20 years. Devoted husband of Mary Ann (Sheilds)
Gragan for 59 years; father of Linda, David, Kathleen, Michael and
Stephen. Brother of Helen, Patricia and Phillip. David had 14
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was buried with full military
honors in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
GERALD "JERRY" DROZE - Passed away Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 at
age 69. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Faye (Penniger)
Droze and the late Haywood Droze. Jerry graduated from Anacostia
High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was
married to Elizabeth (Shade) Droze for 39 years. He was in law
enforcement for 23 years and was a retired Special Agent for the Alcohol
Tobacco and Firearms Bureau.



Jerry was Vice President of the Enforcers Motorcycle Club, active in
Shop with a Cop, Toys for Tots, Shawn Blanton Law Enforcement
Memorial Ride, and various other rides to benefit vetrans, law
enforcement and our community.



In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter Kimberly (Droze)
Lynch of Plantation, FL; son Christopher Droze of Ft. Lauderdale, FL;  
2 brothers Haywood "Danny" Droze and Ronald Droze; 9 neices and
nephews and 3 grandchildren.

NANCY VIRGINIA (HARRISON) DeSTEFANO - A 1950 graduate of
Anacostia High School, and 50 year resident of Annapolis, died at her
home January 9, 2008 at age 75, after a two year illness.



Mrs. DeStefano was born June 28, 1932 in Washington, D.C. to the late
William and Dorothy Harrison.



Nancy graduated from the University of Maryland in 1954 with a BA
from the College of Home Economics. She was a volunteer at the
Hospice of the Chesapeake's "Chesapeake Treasures" resale store for
years. Nancy was a longtime member of St. John's Church in Severna
Park, MD. She enjoyed traveling, going to the theater, doing needlework
and attending her grandchildren's sporting events.



Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Robert; three sons,
William, Robert and Michael; two daughters,Lynn Walterhoefer and Gina
DeStefano; a sister, Kathy Feldman and 11 grandchildren.

EVA (CARRASCO) KRAFT - A 1961 AHS graduate, passed away on
September 10, 2010 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.



Born August 31, 1943 , in New York, NY, she was the daughter of
Arcenio Carrasco and Sylvia Mahlberg.



Mrs. Kraft was a Human Resources Manager with the Department of
Defense for 30 years.



She is survived by John Kraft, her husband of 40 years.
