Virginia Hoyt, 88, a longtime church member and homemaker in Alexandria, died April 24 of a
heart attack at her home in Tavares, Fla.
Mrs. Hoyt was born Olive Virginia Witmer in Hagerstown, Md., and moved to Washington as
a girl. She graduated from Anacostia High School and attended a business school.
She was a charter member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she belonged to
a women's group for many years. She later became a member of Groveton Baptist Church in
Alexandria.
She mentored elementary children and opened her home to foreign-exchange students. She
moved to Florida four years ago.
Her husband of 64 years, Warren Hoyt, died in 2005.
Survivors include five daughters, Marlene Dodds of Fairfax City, Kathleen Roderick and
Jeanette Herter, both of Tavares, Annette Brazil of Gravois Mills, Mo., and Melody Vincenzes
of Fairfax Station; a sister; a brother; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
