Ira E. Norfolk, 71, a longtime Maryland draftsman and civil engineer,
died April 29 of cancer at his home in White Plains.
Mr. Norfolk was a designer with Palmer and Baker Engineers and later
joined the Baltimore architecture and engineering firm of Daniel, Mann,
Johnson & Mendenhall, where he worked on Metro projects. He helped
design the College Park and Branch Avenue Metro stations on the Green
Line. He retired in 2000.
Ira Elwin Norfolk was born in Lothian and grew up in Southeast
Washington. He graduated from Anacostia High School in 1957 and
immediately became a draftsman for the city.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jane Rodgers Norfolk of White
Plains; two daughters; Katherine Norfolk of Charlottesville and Lara
Castle of Newburg; a brother, Bernard Norfolk of Fishersville, Va., and a
sister, Cheryl Holland of Seaford, Del.

Ira Elwin Norfolk, 71, of White Plains, MD, died April 29, 2010, at his
residence with Hospice.
Mr. Norfolk died peacefully at home from complications of cancer. He
grew up in South East, Washington, DC, attended Anacostia High School
and graduated in 1957. He began working at the District Building in DC
as a draftsman in 1957. Worked as a designer at Palmer & Baker
Engineers from 1960 until 1970. Went to DMJM (Daniel, Mann, Johnson
and Mendenhall) Architects and Engineers where he worked as a civil
engineer from 1970 until retirement in 2000. Worked in their Baltimore
office where he helped with the planning, design and construction of the
Baltimore Metro. He also worked on several DC Metro projects including
the College Park and Branch Avenue Metro Stations.
Born January 1, 1939, in Lothian, MD, he was the son of the late
Bernard Alexander Norfolk and the late Ira Moore Norfolk.
Predeceased his parents.
Survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Rodgers Norfolk; daughters,
Katherine Norfolk of Charlottesville, VA and Lara Castle and husband
James of Newburg, MD; brother, Bernard Wayne Norfolk and wife
Shirley of Fishersville, VA; sister, Cheryl Holland of Seaford, DE.
Memorial Service is planned for a later date.
