

BETTY ATTEBERY THORNE 80, On Friday, April 16, 2010 of
Gaithersburg, MD. Betty was the only child of Catherine R. Rutland and
Walter L. Attebery.
She was born in Columbia, S.C. and graduated from Anacostia High
School 1948, in Washington, D.C. She continued her education at the
University of Arizona in Tempe, AZ, where she received a scholarship
toward becoming a graphic artist.
Her art was shown in several galleries in Washington, D.C. Later she
obtained a Master''s Degree with a double major in elementary education
and counseling from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
During her tenure, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year for Prince
George''s County, MD. Her influence led many students to continue their
education under some poor conditions and to become very good,
productive citizens.
She is predeceased by her parents and husband, Horace M. Thorne, who
died in 2001 after retiring from the Department of Education in
Washington, D.C.
Surviving are cousins, Roy L. Michaelis and wife, Karoline of
Charleston, S.C., as well as cousins, Sara Catherine Rutland Copley,
Mary Frances Rutland Barratt and John Raymond Derrick. Also
surviving her are her sister-in-law, Joan T. Stott and husband, Groves
Stott, their son, Quintin Stott and his wife, Jackie, and her late husband''s
great-nephew, Justin Stott of Elm City, N.C. and great-niece, Suzanne
Stott of Wilson, N.C.
Memorial Service will be held at Asbury Methodist Village Parker Hall,
405 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Wednesday, April 28 at
10 AM. Inurnment private. Arrangements by PUMPHREY''S
